FILM/SNEAK PEEK : SYMPOSIUM REVISITS CHAPLIN CONTROVERSY.

The Charlie Chaplin Film Company will celebrate the 50th anniversary of ``Monsieur Verdoux,'' Chaplin's controversial 1947 film, with a daylong symposium and unspooling of a rare print of the dark comedy.

The event, slated for April 12, will be held at the former Chaplin Studios in Hollywood, which is now home to A&M Records. On hand to discussed ``Monsieur Verdoux'' will be Chaplin scholars Timothy Lyons and Charles Maland and actress Marilyn Nash, who made her film debut in the movie.

In ``Monsieur Verdoux,'' Chaplin crafted a film that not only told a story of an out-of-work banker who kills rich women for their money, but also indicted INDICTED, practice. When a man is accused by a bill of indictment preferred by a grand jury, he is said to be indicted.  capitalism. It also characterized war as another form of murder for profit, an unpopular theory at a time when America was basking in its World War II victory.

The movie was first rejected by the Breen Office, the movie industry's self-imposed censors, as unsuitable. It eventually won a limited American release, although the public was not supportive of a Chaplin film that did not feature his lovable Tramp character.

Seating for the 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. ``Monsieur Verdoux'' anniversary celebration is limited. Tickets are $25 in advance; $30 at the door. Lunch is included. For more information, contact the Charlie Chaplin Film Company, 300 S. Topanga Canyon Blvd., Topanga, Calif. 90290; fax, (310) 455-3515. Or e-mail at Chaplinctlaol.com.
