FILM/SNEAK PEEK : STALLONE TO BE HONORED AT PALM SPRINGS FEST.


Sylvester Stallone will receive the Charles A. Crain Career Achievement Award on Jan. 10 during the ninth annual Nortel Palm Springs International Film Festival.

Stallone, who gained fame as an underdog boxer in ``Rocky'' and reached blockbuster status as an action hero, will be saluted at the $400-a-seat awards gala at the Marquis Hotel.

Festival artistic director Paolo Freccero says the 105 titles being shown Jan. 8-19 include 41 U.S. premieres and eight world premieres. The opening night gala will feature screenings of Sergio Rubini's 17th-century drama ``The Bride's Journey'' and the new silent comedy short ``Pass the Gravy.''

The festival schedule also includes Wild, Wild East, a special program of 19 films from the Czech Republic Czech Republic, Czech Česká Republika (2005 est. pop. 10,241,000), republic, 29,677 sq mi (78,864 sq km), central Europe. It is bordered by Slovakia on the east, Austria on the south, Germany on the west, and Poland on the north. , Slovak Republic, Hungary, Slovenia, Estonia, Russia, Bulgaria and Poland. Thirteen titles representing such nations as Argentina, Luxembourg, Austria and Cuba are up for Academy Award consideration in the foreign-language category and will be shown for Oscar voters as well as the public.

 Competition for one-minute digital films created on desktop computers.

The contest is open to teams of two junior or senior high school students (ages 13-19) currently enrolled in school and in good standing. The teams must be sponsored by a high school, college, university or other eligible organization.

Entries must be postmarked by Jan. 23, and the finalists' films will be shown in March at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival, where the winner also will be announced. Prizes include cash awards and computer software and hardware.
