FILM/SNEAK PEEK : SAM FULLER'S FILMS GET NEW LOOK.


The movies of director Sam Fuller are celebrated in a monthlong retrospective beginning at 7:30 tonight at the American Cinematheque in Hollywood with ``Forty Guns,'' the 1957 classic starring Barbara Stanwyck in a brand-new 35mm Cinemascope print. A subversive paean Paean (pē`ən), Paean was an epithet for Apollo, the healer. The paean, a hymn of praise to Apollo and often to other gods, was sung as a prayer for safety or deliverance at battles and other important occasions.  to naked gun lust, the movie was originally titled ``Woman With a Whip'' and featured Stanwyck as a dominatrix in black leather.

Following at 9:30 p.m. is 1951's ``The Green Helmet,'' a Korean War Korean War, conflict between Communist and non-Communist forces in Korea from June 25, 1950, to July 27, 1953. At the end of World War II, Korea was divided at the 38th parallel into Soviet (North Korean) and U.S. (South Korean) zones of occupation.  story starring Gene Evans that was shot in 10 days in Griffith Park. The program continues on Saturday with a repeat of ``Forty Guns'' at 7:15 p.m., followed by ``I Shot Jesse James'' and ``The Baron of Arizona'' on the same bill. Academy Award-winning director William Friedkin will be the August guest of the American Cinematheque's bimonthly bi·month·ly

Friedkin will discuss his career and answer questions following a screening of 1971's ``The French Connection'' at 8 p.m. Aug. 16 at the Raleigh Studios Charlie Chaplin Theater, 5300 Melrose Ave. in Hollywood. Tickets are $7, $4 for members.

Frankenheimer retrospective

Film and television director John Frankenheimer (``The Manchurian Candidate'') will be the subject of a major career retrospective jointly presented by the Museum of Television & Radio and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art The Los Angeles County Museum of Art, also known as LACMA, is the official and world-renowned art museum of the County of Los Angeles, California, located on Wilshire Boulevard along Museum Row in the Miracle Mile vicinity of Los Angeles. . A screening series begins Aug. 15 and runs through Dec. 4 at the Museum of Radio & Television, illuminating themes and stylistic elements that appear in Frankenheimer's work through his 40-year career.
