Varda retrospective

With your cultural radar now sweeping the horizon for all things cinematic and French, it'd be a good time to lay plans for the tribute to filmmaker Agnes Varda, considered ``the mother of the French new wave,'' which runs Thursday through June 20th at the Raleigh Studios Chaplin Theater in Hollywood. Varda, a prototype independent filmmaker and feminist who began working in the 1950s, has devoted her work to capturing the hardships and pleasures of women's lives. In this first major in-person Los Angeles retrospective, presented by American Cinematheque, Varda will be present for discussion after the first screening nearly every evening.

The series begins 7:15 p.m. Thursday with Varda's 1995 tribute to the cinema, ``One Hundred and One Nights'' At 7:15 p.m. June 6, it's ``Vagabond VAGABOND. One who wanders about idly, who has no certain dwelling. The ordinances of the French define a vagabond almost in the same terms. Dalloz, Dict. Vagabondage. See Vattel, liv. 1, Sec. 219, n. ,'' Varda's most acclaimed work, the brutal and unrelenting tale of a young female drifter (Sandrine Bonnaire). For more information, call (213) 466-3456.

More things French

And while you're expanding your French cinema consciousness, check out the new movie ``Irma Vep,'' a sendup of the current state of French cinema that critics are raving about, now playing at Laemmle's Town Center 5 in Encino and Music Hall in Beverly Hills.
