Spike's moment

The Spike Lee retrospective is wrapping up at the American Cinematheque's Egyptian in Hollywood. Lee's emergence in the 1980s not only propelled indie filmmakers but led the way for other African-American directors to create films with their own distinct voices, for example John Singleton (``Boyz N the Hood''), Carl Franklin (``Devil in a Blue Dress'') and Reginald Hudlin (``House Party'').

At 7 tonight, there will be a screening of ``Mo Better Blues'' (1990), a jazz movie the way Lee wanted to make it. ``Clockers'' follows at 9:30 and examines the cycle of urban violence and terror through the eyes of a 16-year-old boy whose loyalty to the local drug lord extends to killing. Saturday's program starts at 6 p.m. with a triple-header of ``Get on the Bus,'' ``He Got Game'' and ``Freak.'' The latter is a collaboration between Lee and John Leguizamo, who adapts his one-man show about being a Latino in America for the big screen.

Tickets cost $7 for general public, $5 for Cinematheque cin·e·ma·theque
