Boron nitride powder is said to be an excellent polymeric material additive for applications requiring very low thermal resistance. It provides the electrical resistance and the dielectric constant other high thermally conductive materials lack.

The morphology of boron nitride powder is platelet shaped. This characteristic provides superior thermal conductivity measurements when used as an additive in polymers and is said to outperform other ceramic, electrically insulating materials because of the platelet structure.

Applications where heat dissipation requirements continue to increase will see improved results and increased usage temperatures with the addition of boron nitride.

Boron nitride has excellent lubrication lubrication, introduction of a substance between the contact surfaces of moving parts to reduce friction and to dissipate heat. A lubricant may be oil, grease, graphite, or any substance—gas, liquid, semisolid, or solid—that permits free action of  properties, providing lower friction coefficients and reduced wear when used as an additive. Walnut-shell flours low-density fillers for phenolics and cast polyesters. Standard grades (WF-5, -200 mesh; and WF-7, -325 mesh) are light in color, free-flowing, nontoxic, low in resin demand, and easily dispersed.

Thermax thermal carbon black produced via thermal decomposition of natural gas in the absence of oxygen has low-level structure and large particle size in several grades. Can be compounded at high loadings without degrading polymer properties. Provides very low abrasion, good dielectric properties, chemical and heat resistance, and low sieve residue values (typically 2 ppm on 325 mesh). Applications include XLPE XLPE Cross Linked Polyethylene  wire and cable insulation, heat-shrinkable connectors, and general pigmentation pigmentation, name for the coloring matter found in certain plant and animal cells and for the color produced thereby. Pigmentation occurs in nearly all living organisms. .


Solid glass microspheres in various sizes reinforce and extend all thermosets and most thermoplastics for injection molding, extrusion, compression molding, and open-mold casting. Treated with silane or other coatings. Said to increase flow and ease of extrusion; raise compressive strength, stiffness and abrasion resistance; reduce creep, water absorption and shrinkage; and give better mold fill and more uniform cooling, which can cut injection molding cycles by 20%.

Endex MP metal-plastic compounds in various thermoplastic carriers are highly filled (up to 93%) with various metal powders. Compounds include copper-nylon, stainless steel-HDPE, and iron-acetal. Products used in applications such as injection molded jewelry, containers, gears, and conductive compounds.


Mineral reinforcements include Translink surface-modified calcined kaolin; inert, fine-particled Satintone calcined kaolin extenders and reinforcements with low residue and moisture; ASP, Buca and Catalpo hydrous kaolin in various particle sizes and modifications including surface treatments and delamination delamination /de·lam·i·na·tion/ (de-lam?i-na´shun) separation into layers, as of the blastoderm.

 mica consists of tiny, extremely thin flakes of a potassium/aluminum silicate crystal with traces of other elements. Flakes have a silvery, off-white color, average thickness of 0.5 to 2 microns, and 2 to 150 micron diam. Available in nominal 100, 160 and 325 mesh grades and in 1000-mesh and finer special grades. Can increase stiffness; modulus, yield stress, breaking stress, and heat-deflection temperature. High dielectric strength and low power factor make it useful in electrical applications. Thermoplastic microspheres are ultra-lightweight, flexible, and resilient. Average density between 0.025 and 0.060 g/[c.sup.3]; average particle diam. Of 20 to 140 microns. Uniform cell structure and compatibility with resins such as PUR, epoxies, PVC, and PE. Also used in polyesters as a lightweight filler that imparts enough flexibility to the composite to reduce cracking and brittleness.

Available unexpanded for in-situ foaming. RIM applications incorporate Expancel DU (dry, unexpanded) to achieve target densities and reduce shrinkage. PVC plastisols use Expancel DU for uniform, controlled voids in foaming. Grades available at expansion temperatures from 176 to 400 F.


Solka-Floc cellulose filler improves impact strength and wear characteristics in moving parts. Low specific gravity, controlled bulk, and good thermal properties. Filled urea compounds reportedly withstand temperatures to 170 F; melamine compounds withstand 210 F; and darker colored phenolics take even higher temperatures.


Amical NSF-listed calcium carbonate in a range of particle sizes includes surface-treated products. This oolite oolite (ō`əlīt, ō`ō–), rock composed of small concretions, usually of calcium carbonate, containing a nucleus and clearly defined concentric shells.  material can be used in vinyl, polyester, and urethanes, minimizing mold wear. Zeothix precipitated hydrated silicas offer thixotropy and viscosity control. Snowhite high-purity, dry-ground calcium carbonates in tightly controlled particlesize distribution reportedly allow optimized filler levels.


Dry- and wet-ground calcium carbonate. Wet-ground Omyacarb in fine and ultrafine grades comes with or without surface treatment and is a high-purity, high-brightness grade used in rigid and flexible PVC siding, pipe, profile, calendering and wire/ cable compounds, polyolefin film and injection molding. Dry-ground Omyacarb from 5 to 20 microns mean diam. is for plasticized PVC, elastomers, epoxies, PUR, and polyesters.


Micropoppers are 2-6 micron hollow polymeric microspheres, which expand to 10 times their original volume inside the resin matrix when heated to 265-300 F. Can be made of various resins including PMMA PMMA polymethyl methacrylate. , PVDC, or SAN. Unexpanded density is just over 1.0 g/cc. Depending on wall thickness and coatings used, expanded density can range from 0.02-0.03 g/cc to 0.15-0.22 g/cc. Products have been used in PS and PVDC.

Also available in expanded form under the name Polymicroshells. This pourable filler can be sprayed and pumped at high shear and pressure.

Magnesium hydroxide fillers reportedly improve smoke suppression in PVC, EVA and PR. Magnum-White and MGH-93 are milled to mean particle sizes of 2, 10 and 30 microns.

Magnum-White contains a minimum of 35% magnesium hydroxide and MGH-93 a minimum of 85% (average 93%). Reportedly reduces or eliminates need for antimony oxide.


Mineral fillers include products with less than 0.1% free crystalline silica, surface-treated calcium carbonates in particle sizes as small as 0.04 micron average present unique thickening and reinforcing opportunities. . Can be used in greater amounts than short asbestos fibers without causing overly high viscosities and can be added along with other dry ingredients. PMF Fiber consists of short fibers for filling inside corners, in molded in-hole areas and molded in-pin areas, which are usually fiber-poor. Variation in fiber length allows it to flow well with the resin and reduces flow-line segregation.


Hydrophilic and organophilic rheological additives for a wide range of industrial applications including paints, coatings, greases, plastics, inks, adhesives, caulks and sealants, and personal- and household-care products.

 antiblock tales for polyolefin films that provide a balance of blocking efficiency, optical properties, and ease of handling. PolyBloc and MicroBloc talcs minimize absorption of expensive formula additives.

MicroTuff chemically surface-modified reinforcing talcs possess enhanced impact/ stiffness balance, superior long-term heat stability, and superior color and color uniformity.

Super-Pflex and Ultra-Pflex precipitated calcium carbonate (both with 0.7 micron average particle size) used extensively in rigid PVC applications. Super-Pflex provides higher loading levels and reduced formulation costs while maintaining critical properties in PVC siding and profiles. UltraPflex enhances impact strength and surface appearance in extruded and molded parts.

ViCron ground calcium carbonate products and coated Hi-Pflex, PFinyl, and SuperFil exhibit controlled particle size, high brightness, low resin demand, and ease of handling. Applications in flexible PVC compounds, specialty polyolefins, and calendered vinyls.



Low-cost, medium-to-large particle-size surface-modified silicas improve stain and abrasion resistance and weatherability. F-200 (70-75 mesh), and F-400 (42-45 mesh) silicas permit exceptionally high loadings without severe loss of physical or chemical properties.

F-Series silica fillers are compatible with FRP backup layers, gel coats, epoxy flooring, and other thermosets and thermoplastics. In epoxy and polyester systems F-400 and F-200 replace up to 75% of resin and can substitute for glass beads and microspheres.

F-1200 and F-1500 are high-purity, surface-modified ground silicas with multifunctional surface characteristics. Provide strong, dense, chemical-resistant composites. Compatible with many polymers, such as polyester, PE, and PP. Consistent whiteness provides batch-to-batch color uniformity.

Most common feldspathoid mineral, an aluminosilicate of sodium and potassium (Na3KAl4Si4O16). It is sometimes used as a substitute for feldspars in the manufacture of glass and ceramics.
 also used in PVC and polyester gel coats to maintain color clarity, and in BMC for patio furniture or microwave cookware that's resistant to staining. Also a proven antiblock for PE where clarity is important.


Anhydrous calcium sulfate in two particle sizes: Snow White filler (8-micron average) and CA-s (2-micron average). Snow White filler is primarily used in PVC resins and plastisols, and BMC. It is particularly useful when acid resistance, high loadings and white color are necessary. CA-5 is successful in thermoset polyesters for electrical applications.

Both fillers can be used to extend rigid and flexible thermoplastics, and reinforced and unreinforced thermosets. They are relatively soft (2.5 to 3.0 Mohs scale), which results in reduced equipment wear, and are very white in color (averaging 98 on the Beckman scale).

CAS-20-4 anhydrous calcium sulfate is an extremely white, finely divided particulate filler with average particle size of 4 microns and top size of 20 microns. Manufactured by controlled calcination calcination (kăl'sənā`shən), in metallurgy, process of heating solid material to drive off volatile chemically combined components, e.g., carbon dioxide. It is sometimes a step in the extraction of metals from ores. , fine grinding, and air separation of high-purity gypsum rock. Calcination process substantially reduces its moisture affinity. Recommended for thermoplastics, thermosets, and plastisols. Approved for food-packaging applications because of its high purity and food-acid resistance. Suitable for plastics requiring high filler loadings and balanced physical properties. Can partially replace titanium dioxide because of its high brightness.


Min-U-Sil micronized silica from 5 to 40 micron top size; Sil-Co-Sil ground silica from 40 to 125 micron top size; and SnowTex calcined kaolin clay.

Min-U-Sil and Sil-Co-Sil contain at least 99.5% pure [SiO.sub.2] and are used in products requiring rigid control of physical and chemical properties. Durability and chemical inertness suit them to epoxies and unsaturated polyesters.

Snow-Tex, a superior [TiO.sub.2] extender for PVC systems, has a high covering power, gives desirable flow properties and reduces the amount of costly pigments required.


Nytal tales in five grades have average particle sizes of 2.3 to 38 microns.

Wollastonite (calcium meta-silicate) for polyesters, nylon and other resins. Three grades offered: Vansil W-10 (2% retained on 200 mesh), Vansil W-20 (2% retained on 325 mesh), and Vansil W-30 (0.06% retained on 325 mesh).

Clay products in different particle sizes include Dixie clay (0.2-micron average) and McNamee clay (2-micron).
