FIGHTING FASHIONISTA WAR WITH `UGLY' VS. BEAUTY.

Byline: - David Kronke

In ``Ugly Betty Ugly Betty is an Emmy-winning[1] American television comedy-drama series starring America Ferrera, Eric Mabius, Rebecca Romijn and Vanessa Williams. The series premiered on September 28, 2006, on ABC in the United States and on Citytv in Canada. ,'' America Ferrara stars as a sunny, intelligent young woman, considered overweight and in possession of a bad fashion sense, who gets a job at a glossy fashion magazine where she is roundly abused by her co-workers and humiliated hu·mil·i·ate

Any similarities to ``The Devil Wears Prada'' are purely coincidental. ,'' ``Ugly Betty'' executive producer Salma Hayek told reporters at the semiannual television press tour in Pasadena on Tuesday.

The Oscar-nominated Hayek began her career giving histrionic histrionic /his·tri·on·ic/ (his?tre-on´ik) excessively dramatic or emotional, as in histrionic personality disorder; see under personality.  performances in telenovelas and will appear in cameos as an over-the-top maid who runs very hot and extremely cold in a telenovela Betty likes to watch.

``It's a lot of fun to go back and do it,'' Hayek says of her not-too-subtle acting gig. ``I'm making fun of myself, and very rarely do you get an opportunity to do that.''

``Ugly Betty'' pokes fun at our notions of beauty.

``She's not ugly, but what do we call ugly today?'' Hayek noted.

``Some people consider anyone who's not a skinny, tall model ugly.

I've seen a lot of skinny, tall models who I think are ugly. Eat a little food and look healthy!''

The role has clearly had an effect on Ferrara.

``When I'm in character and in Betty's costumes, I feel beautiful,'' said Ferrara. ``I never feel as beautiful and confident in my real life. There's a light that shines from within. I love, love, love being her.''

It takes a lot of effort to make Ferrara ugly. The actress has been fitted with a set of extremely thick braces that ``pop right out if I want to go to the craft-services table.''

``Which on this show we encourage,'' Hayek joked: ``Go to the craft-services table! Go to the craft-services table!''

Ferrara added, ``I'm very obedient.''
