VAL VERDE Val Verde may mean:

  • Val Verde, Texas
  • Val Verde Park, Texas
  • Val Verde County, Texas

brings her two children to Val Verde Park at least once a day for their swimming lessons and swim team practices.

The family's use of the park's aging facilities rarely goes beyond the pool, but the Val Verde mother said she is encouraged by the county's recent pledge of more than $1.6 million to renovate the 58-acre park, including adding a new play area and security lighting.

``The kids, they're growing and they need things to climb, space to run around,'' Pritchett said of her daughter, 10, and 8-year-old son. ``It would be nice if they add more (equipment) and fix it up.''

The county pledge came last week as the Board of Supervisors approved the Val Verde Community Regional Park General Improvement Project, which would add new playground Playground - A visual language for children, developed for Apple's Vivarium Project.  and a variety of other issues.

Work on the project is scheduled to begin in November and last about nine months. While it was designed so the park can remain open during construction, access to some areas - the play area, basketball court, tennis court and ballfield - will be limited as work progresses.

Project approval comes after a variety of community meetings designed to incorporate local residents' comments into the plan for the park, which was constructed in the 1920s when Val Verde became a weekend haven for blacks disillusioned dis·il·lu·sion

The project now calls for construction of a play area at the northeast corner of the park. The current play area, next to the clubhouse, will be removed and crews will install a drainage system Noun 1. drainage system - a system of watercourses or drains for carrying off excess water

``We learned at the meetings that (the community) really wanted a new baseball field and a soccer field,'' said Gil Lopez, assistant director of planning and design for the county Department of Parks and Recreation. ``We came up with a plan for a multiuse field that can be both, depending on what sport is being played.''

The multiuse field, which will be on the rest of the site of the current baseball field, will be designed at an angle so the baseball field will conform to Verb 1. conform to - satisfy a condition or restriction; "Does this paper meet the requirements for the degree?"

Jace and Denise Engles take their 6-year-old daughter to Val Verde park for her swimming lessons, which is convenient for the Castaic residents.

The couple was encouraged to hear of the changes that will be coming to the park.

``I'm glad they're going to improve the park,'' Denise Engles said. ``I'd like to see (improvements to the) landscaping. And if they add more programs, they're going to have more people. I'm certainly willing to come from Castaic.''
