FIELD LAB GETS POLLUTION-RULES BREATHER.

State water regulators on Friday gave the Santa Susana Santa Susana can refer to several places:
  • The Santa Susana Mountains in southern California
  • Santa Susana Pass, running through the abovementioned mountains
  • Santa Susana Field Laboratory, near Los Angeles, a test facility for rockets and (formerly) nuclear reactors
 Field Lab an eight-month reprieve from complying with tough new pollution rules, angering local environmental watchdogs.

The decision by California Water Resources Control Board member Jerry Secundy came after a hearing held Monday in Sacramento. Boeing Co., which owns the lab, had asked the state to temporarily freeze pollution limits until another hearing later this year to determine whether the lab's new water permit is too strict.

Secundy agreed with Boeing's argument that the company could face penalties and citizen lawsuits if it violates the permit while the review is pending.

Boeing officials could not be reached late Friday for comment.

Between July 2004 and April 2005, Boeing received 48 permit violations.

The company asked for the state to revise the permit, saying it needs more time to comply.
