FIELD GOALS RUN IN THIS FAMILY ANOTHER VALENTINO IS A STRONG-LEGGED STANDOUT FOR PALMDALE HIGH.

PALMDALE - In the Palmdale High football community, the Valentino name has become synonymous with synonymous with
adjective equivalent to, the same as, identical to, similar to, identified with, equal to, tantamount to, interchangeable with, one and the same as
 kicking.

First, there was Anthony Valentino, a three-year varsity placekicker/punter who made his mark with a 54-yard field goal in 1997. That remains a school record.

Now there's Matt Valentino, Anthony's younger brother Wiki is aware of the following uses of "'Younger Brother":

, who went to many of his brother's games but doesn't remember much of what he saw. ``It was pretty fun to watch him,'' he said, ``but I was usually freezing.''

But he does remember Anthony's record-setting field goal, which hit the crossbar and bounced through the uprights.

And now, it is the younger Valentino who, in just his sophomore year is making an impact at Palmdale.

Valentino, who is in his second season on varsity, has assumed all punting and place-kicking duties for the Falcons. His high-pressure position is about to get even more so as Palmdale opens the Division III

Despite his youth, Valentino has the confidence of his coaches and teammates.

It's really nice to not have to worry about that aspect of your game.

``There were some times this year when we had to have some field goals. He just strokes it like it's nothing.''

Said Palmdale quarterback Terry Furlow: ``He means a whole lot to this team.''

But although Valentino maintains a stoic demeanor, he admits to feeling the pressure.

``There is a lot of pressure, the coach depends on you a lot,'' said Valentino, who copes with the stress by pacing back and forth on the sidelines On the sidelines

It seems to work.

Valentino has made 18 PATs this season and has five field goals, including a personal-best 45-yarder against Highland. Although he is averaging 36 yards a punt, Valentino thinks he needs to work on being more consistent.

He has already improved as a placekicker. He said he could only kick field goals in practice from 42 yards last season, and he has already extended his range to beyond 50 yards.

Although he said he would never gloat if he ultimately breaks his older brother's record, he hopes to someday some·day

``It'd mean a lot to me,'' he said. ``I would never brag in front of him, but I'd be enjoying it.''
