FEWER CONSUMERS ARE WAITING UNTIL THE LAST MINUTE TO COMPLETE HOLIDAY SHOPPING

ATLANTA, Dec. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Only one-third of American shoppers are waiting until the last minute to complete their 1992 holiday shopping, according to a just-completed poll of consumers by the accounting firm of Arthur Andersen.
In a random telephone survey of the 15 largest retail markets, 32 percent of consumers indicated they will wait until these final seven shopping days to complete their gift buying. This is a drop from last year, when 36 percent said they were waiting for the last few days to finish their shopping. This finding is especially significant in light of the fact that the 1991 holiday season was two days shorter than this year's.
"Those retailers who are expecting larger sales increases as the season ends may be disappointed," explained Larry Katzen, managing partner of Arthur Andersen's Worldwide Retail Industry Services. "An earlier survey our firm conducted also confirmed that, nationwide, most consumers are shopping at about the same time as they did last year or earlier."
The Arthur Andersen survey was conducted by the firm's Atlanta office. Random telephone calls were made to 225 consumers in the top 15 U.S. retail markets on Dec. 16 and 17.
