on Sunday. The annual event, which began in 1998, offers a day of interactive activities and more than 40 cultural performances on five stages -- and it's all free.

Among the entertainment groups scheduled to appear are Dream Shapers Native American Music Native American music. The music of Native North Americans is primarily a vocal art, usually choral, although some nations favor solo singing. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region,  Dance Academy and Niemes Ballet Folklorico.

``So many times we hear from people that the festival was the first time they had ever seen taiko

Hughlett. She said it gives families a chance to experience the magic of professional and community music, dance and theater. She said a great deal of attention goes into putting together a lineup of activities and entertainment that will be as diverse as it is culturally enriching.

Many of the performers have become staples of the festival, including Jim Gamble's puppets and singer/storyteller Joanie Bartels. Others, such as Imagination Machine, will appear for the first time. The Orange County-based children's theater company performs at elementary and middle schools throughout Southern California.

Imagination Machine's goal is to stimulate students to develop their imaginations through creative writing. It accomplishes this by performing stories that children from area schools have submitted.

``The stories we perform can be anywhere from two lines to several pages,'' said Deborah Wren wren, small, plump perching songbird of the family Troglodytidae. There are about 60 wren species, and all except one are restricted to the New World. The plumage is usually brown or reddish above and white, gray, or buff, often streaked, below. , the group's founder and artistic director. ``We have four actors who perform them and all the action is underscored by a live musician.

``We do have a few props -- like ladders, boxes and stools -- but our motto is minimal props, maximum imagination. We want to show the children this is something they can do in their own back yards.''

In the past 25 years, Imagination Machine has appeared at more than 300 schools in five counties. The company also holds creative writing workshops.

Wren said every child who submits a story that is used for a performance receives a writing achievement certificate. A brief ceremony to award the certificates will take place Sunday at the end of the group's show.

Like the Imagination Machine, the Southern California Dance Academy serves to encourage youngsters to take part in a form of creative expression. Since its inception in 1994, the academy has built its repertoire to four annual stage productions representing classical story ballets, choreographic projects and children's performances.

The group will bring a portion of the 1890s ballet ``Coppelia'' to the arts festival. The ballet, which was written by French composer Leo Delibes Noun 1. Leo Delibes - French composer of operas (1836-1891)

  • Doll maker (Internet), a web site for creating customized doll images or "dollz"
searching to find a way to bring one special doll to life. Twenty dancers, ranging from amateur to professional, will bring the story to the stage.

``The nice thing about this ballet is that it tells a story,'' said Paula Vreulink, the academy's artistic director and co-founder. ``A lot of times people don't want to sit through a ballet because they think they won't understand it. But that's not the case here. And this piece also has a lot of comedy, so I think everyone will really have a good time watching it.''

Another form of ballet scheduled to be showcased Sunday is Niemes Ballet Folklorico. The organization started in 2002 with only seven students and a volunteer instructor. It has since expanded to 30 students, taught by professional flamenco flamenco, Spanish music and dance typical of the Gypsy, or gitano. Flamenco dancing is characterized by colorful costumes, intense and erotic movements, stamping of the feet (zapateado), and clapping of the hands (palmada  dancer Gabriela Serrano.

The group's repertoire for the festival will include six dances from different regions of Mexico, including Jalisco, Sinaloa, northern Mexico and Chiapas.

``We encourage everyone to remember their ethnic customs and to be proud of their parents and their ancestors,'' said Maria Leyva, coordinator for the group.

Topping off Sunday's event is the Musical Zoo, an interactive area where children can enjoy a hands-on experience with trumpets, flutes, violins, cellos and other instruments. The idea for the Musical Zoo was inspired by the late Wayne Shilkret, former executive director at the Cerritos Center. Shilkret believed it was important to offer a hands-on musical experience at the festival.

According to Cindy Shilkret, her husband believed children should have a chance to participate in activities that bolster their self-esteem as well as introduce them to the arts.

He also hoped to build the Cerritos Center audience by getting kids and their parents interested in cultural events.

The festival is made possible by the Cerritos-based group Friends of Arts Education.
