Unusually cold weather earlier in the week combined with strong winds and rain had organizers worrying, but calm, sunny skies Saturday were perfect.

``More than everything, the weather cooperated,'' said Bob Greene This article is about the modern journalist and author. For the personal trainer and fitness expert, see Bob Greene (fitness guru).

Other towns in the district include Morecambe, Heysham, Slyne, and Carnforth.  Parks and Recreation Department. `We're very pleased. We were worried about the wind and rain, and here it's just gorgeous.''

The festival, held in honor of the California poppy, which was selected in 1903 to represent the state, takes place at Lancaster City Park and will continue today from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Typically, organizers would direct festivalgoers to the Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve The Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve is a California wildlife reserve located in the rural westside of the Antelope Valley in northern Los Angeles County. Last year during festival time poppies could be seen throughout the valley, organizers said.

``It was a really good year,'' said Greene, adding that the festival attracted 62,000 people, the most in its history. ``We have poppies blooming all over our valley. This year, we just don't have the blooms.''

``Timing is everything,'' Greene added. ``They may come three weeks later.''

Arthur Gonzales, 31, who attended the festival with his son, daughter, mother and sister, said that he had already visited the outskirts of the poppy poppy, common name for some members of the Papaveraceae, a family composed chiefly of herbs of the Northern Hemisphere having a characteristic milky or colored sap.  reserve.

``There's not that many, but they're there,'' said Gonzales, who viewed some of the flowers along the roadside. ``I love the flowers. They're beautiful.''

Gonzales said that he has attended previous festivals and enjoys browsing at the different booths and watching the entertainment.

``I've always had a good time,'' Gonzales said. ``The weather is nice today. It's a great day to be in the park.''

Taking advantage of the weather and taking a break from household chores, Joan Gonzales, 53, of Acton came to the festival with her husband. Sitting on the grass alongside a new exhibit, the two had a picnic as they enjoyed some festival food.

``We were doing a lot of work and thought we would get out,'' said Gonzales, adding that this was the first time she had attended the festival. ``This is great. They have a lot of interesting things here.''

This year's festival brought some new attractions including a traveling millennium museum, the Poppy Pavilion and a climbing rock.

``Our goal is making sure to keep our quality up and improve the attractions,'' Greene said. The event generates a lot of positive comments. We're pleased to be a part of this.''
