FERNANDO FOUNDATION HAILS VETERAN VOLUNTEER.

UNIVERSAL CITY - J. Richard Leyner was honored Friday for his decades of community service with the presentation of the 2005 Fernando Award, the San Fernando San Fernando, city, Argentina

Nearly 300 people attended the dinner at the Sheraton Universal Hotel, where the accolades included video tributes and personal messages.

``It's such a euphoric feeling,'' said Leyner, 68, of Northridge. ``You work all your life for all kinds of things - family, friends, your charities - and then someone says, Gee, that's great, let's honor you.

``But it's my life. If you give, you get. And if you get, you've got to give.''

, immediate past president of the Fernando Award Foundation Inc., praised Leyner for his tireless efforts and spoke of the importance of community service - the hallmark of the Fernando Award.

``There are so many people in our society in need,'' she said. ``They may be homeless, without parents or abused, but we who are lucky in our lives must give back our work, wisdom and wealth and help make our community stronger and a good place for children to grow up."

Like most Fernando Award nominees, Leyner is active in a variety of organizations.

He has served as chairman of the Child Development Institute, president of the Encino Chamber of Commerce and as a board member of both the Economic Alliance of the San Fernando Valley San Fernando Valley

He also is an advisory board member of the San Fernando Valley Research Center; an adviser to the marketing department at California State University, Northridge CSUN offers a variety of programs leading to bachelor's degrees in 61 fields and master's degrees in 42 fields. The university has over 150,000 alumni. It's also home to a summer musical theater/theater program known as TADW (TeenAge Drama Workshop) that leads teenagers through an ; creator of a sponsor program for the United Chambers of Commerce; and chairman of the marketing and finance committee of the UCC An abbreviation for the Uniform Commercial Code. .

He is chairman of the Encino Business Improvement District and has served as president of the Encino Neighborhood Council.

Leyner was selected from among five finalists for the award, given annually since 1959.

Last year's winner was Karl L. Boeckmann, a vice president of Galpin Ford in North Hills, who volunteered for such organizations as Juvenile Justice Connection Projects, Goodwill Industries, New Directions for Youth and El Centro El Centro (ĕl sĕn`trō), city (1990 pop. 31,384), seat of Imperial co., SE Calif., near the Mexican border; inc. 1908. It is a processing and shipping center for a heavily irrigated agricultural region (vegetables, grain, cotton,  De Amistad Inc.
