Jill Banks Barad, Karl Boeckmann, Dorothy Jean Jauck, J. Richard Leyner and William F. Powers Jr. were selected from a field of 10 nominees at the Jesse F. McHam Fernando Nomination Luncheon.

The finalists will be honored at a gala dinner Nov. 5, when the winner will be announced. The award, which was created in 1958, is named for a fictitious Based upon a fabrication or pretense.

``It's more important than ever today, because there's a generation that seems to have lost the idea of being a community servant,'' Pollack added, noting that many organizations lack volunteers in their 30s and 40s.

The finalists said they were honored to be considered, but called themselves just a small sampling of many dedicated volunteers in the area.

``You don't do this because you want to win a Fernando Award,'' said Leyner, 67, of Northridge. ``You do it to be a part of the community.''

Leyner is chairman of the Child Development Institute and the Encino Business Improvement District, a board member of the Economic Alliance of the San Fernando Valley and New Directions for Youth, and president of the Encino Neighborhood Council.

``It's all given from the heart,'' said Boeckmann, 68, of Encino. ``None of it is done for self-recognition. It's just what we are.''

Boeckmann is active in associations that include the Juvenile Justice Connection Project, Goodwill Industries, New Directions for Youth, Childhelp USA, the John Wayne Cancer Institute and the National Diabetes Association.

``It's a great honor to be a volunteer,'' said Jauck, 72, of West Hills. ``You're working with people, and you gain from that.''

Jauck, a board member of the Canoga Park/West Hills Chamber of Commerce, is also active with the Guadalupe Community Center, Canoga-Owensmouth Historical Society and Friends of the Madrid Theater.

``This is an acknowledgment acknowledgment, in law, formal declaration or admission by a person who executed an instrument (e.g., a will or a deed) that the instrument is his. The acknowledgment is made before a court, a notary public, or any other authorized person.  from the community for the work we do when we volunteer,'' said Powers, 58, of Chatsworth.

``It's an honor to be recognized by your peers,'' added Barad of Sherman Oaks.
