FERNANDO AWARD FIELD TO NARROW; 15 AREA VOLUNTEERS COMPETE FOR CIVIC LEADERSHIP HONOR.

Fifteen people who have devoted their lives to helping others are vying for this year's Fernando Award, the most prestigious civic leadership award in the San Fernando Valley San Fernando Valley

Valley, southern California, U.S. Northwest of central Los Angeles, the valley is bounded by the San Gabriel, Santa Susana, and Santa Monica mountains and the Simi Hills.

For the past 39 years the annual award has recognized people dedicated to volunteering, organizers said.

Five finalists will be selected Friday for the award, formally known as the Jesse McHam-Fernando Award. An awards luncheon will be held at the Sheraton Universal Hotel in Universal City.

Fernando Award President Jeffrey L. Glassman called this year's nominees role models for the rest of the Valley.

``We have an extraordinary group who can once again exemplify the spirit of volunteerism in the San Fernando Valley,'' Glassman said.

Last year's winner Nancy L. Schmidt said she's worked with a number of the nominees over the past years. ``They're active participants in the volunteer arena in the Valley and they're very well-deserving of the award individually,'' Schmidt said.

Schmidt is the vice president and manager of the Sherman Oaks branch of American Pacific State Bank and founder and president of the San Fernando Valley Charitable Foundation.

On Friday, the award organization will also present its first $1,000 Volunteerism Scholarship Award to Jennifer Schlesinger. Schlesinger is a graduate of North Hollywood High School North Hollywood High School, originally called Lankershim High School when it opened in 1927, is a secondary school in North Hollywood in Los Angeles, California. The school mascot is the husky, and the school colors are blue, white, grey.  currently studying at the University of California at Berkeley (body, education) University of California at Berkeley - (UCB)

A special committee composed of Fernando board members, past award recipients, benefactors, patrons and Chamber of Commerce representatives will review the applications of nominees.
