FERC SETS PUBLIC CONFERENCE ON MOJAVE PIPELINE EXPANSION

BAKERSFIELD, Calif., Oct. 26 /PRNewswire/ -- The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) has issued a notice that it will hold a public conference "to examine certain jurisdictional issues" and explore other matters related to Mojave Pipeline Company's Northward Expansion Project. It will be held Dec. 16 in Washington.
Mojave, a federally regulated interstate natural gas pipeline, filed its application for a certificate to build and operate its Northward Expansion Project on March 17, 1993. Through that project Mojave will expand its existing system which operates between Topock, Ariz., and Bakersfield, to Sacramento and the East Bay region. Mojave provides only natural gas transportation service under the FERC's open-access rules, and is a wholly owned subsidiary of El Paso Natural Gas Co. (NYSE: EPG).
"This is good news," said Mike Holland, Mojave president and CEO. "We've asked the FERC several times to give us their plan and timetable for addressing the major issues surrounding our proposal, and now we have it. The public conference format will let all interested parties informally take part in the FERC review process, in Washington, D.C., under FERC supervision. Many of our customers and supporters have been awaiting this opportunity and I'm sure they will be heard."
In its notice setting the conference, the FERC lists nine questions as the basis for exploring the policy and practical effects of its decisions in the Mojave case, and invites all involved parties to participate. Those wishing to do so must send a request to the FERC by Dec. 9.
Following the conference, the FERC plan will allow the filing of written statements by Jan. 10, 1994. "That would probably be the last step in the public process before the FERC completes its review of our application, and should enable them to issue our certificate by early spring," Holland said.
