Carlos Hernandez, 24, was convicted in November of trying to kill Edgar Martinez, 24, after an altercation in a downtown Glendale bar a year earlier.

He posted bail just days before his Dec. 11 sentencing and has not been seen since, said Glendale police Sgt. Ian Grimes.

``He posted bail because he intended to flee, because he knew he was facing 25 years to life,'' Grimes said, adding that Hernandez should be considered armed and dangerous.

``He knows what's facing him, so he's got nothing to lose,'' Grimes said.

Grimes believes Hernandez fled to Mexico, where he has relatives. Mexico will not extradite ex·tra·dite

Grimes and Deputy District Attorney Charles Chaiyarachta are upset by the disappearance of Hernandez.

``I'm disappointed and I hope that one way or another we'll be able to find him and bring him over for sentencing,'' Chaiyarachta said.

Grimes was surprised that the court set bail for Hernandez, or that the convicted felon An individual who commits a crime of a serious nature, such as Burglary or murder. A person who commits a felony.

But Liz MacPherson, who runs Paco's Bail Bonds, the firm that paid Hernandez's bail and put up the $1.5 million, said it was a routine bail request.

``If a client is sitting in your office with everything he needs for our insurance, then any bondsman would take it,'' MacPherson said.
