Byline: Jim Skeen Daily News Staff Writer

U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein Dianne Goldman Berman Feinstein (born June 22, 1933) is the senior U.S. Senator from California, having held office as a senator since 1992. She is a member of the Democratic Party.  joined Rep. Howard ``Buck'' McKeon in urging the Air Force to abandon an idea of placing the Flight Test Center at Edwards under the command of a Florida base.

In a joint letter dated Tuesday, the Democratic senator and the Republican congressman from Santa Clarita Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. If there is any consolidation, it should involve bringing test activities to Edwards, the two wrote.

``We urge you to fully consider Edwards Air Force Base Edwards Air Force Base, U.S. military installation, 301,000 acres (121,805 hectares), S Calif., NE of Lancaster; est. 1933. It is one of the largest air force bases in the United States and has the world's longest runway.  as the location for the consolidated flight testing command. It seems only logical that the headquarters of these activities should be where the Air Force conducts over 80 percent of its flight tests,'' the letter said.

``We hope that any decision on where to locate this new Proving Command be delayed until Edwards Air Force Base is given equal and fair consideration.''

There was no immediate response to the letter Tuesday.

The Air Force has acknowledged having ``very preliminary discussions at Headquarters Air Force levels'' about the idea of forming a Proving Command. However, the service said there is ``no discussion or intent to move any missions from Edwards Air Force Base.''
