FEES TAKING OFF AT AIRPORT LOTS.

Byline: Jason Kandel Staff Writer

Daily fees at some LAX parking lots will increase 50 percent and double at the Van Nuys Airport Van Nuys Airport (IATA: VNY, ICAO: KVNY, FAA LID: VNY) is a public airport located in Van Nuys, California in the San Fernando Valley, within the Los Angeles city limits.  Flyaway Bus The FlyAway Bus is a shuttle bus service operated by Los Angeles World Airports, which transports people to and from Los Angeles International Airport. Currently, there are three routes in service with separate schedules; the routes have no stops in between their terminus stations  Terminal under a plan approved Tuesday by the Board of Airport Commissioners.

storage of recreational vehicles at Van Nuys. Critics say the increase is just another financial burden on the public.

``As passenger facility charges increase, the L.A. World Airports should do everything in their power to keep parking costs down,'' said Sherman Oaks resident David Rankell. ``The L.A. Department of Airports should think about using vacant spots for long-term storage rather than increasing fees, an additional burden on area residents.''

The five-member Board of Airport Commissioners unanimously approved the plan, which includes increasing parking fees at LAX's Central Terminal Area from $16 to $24 a day, and an increase from $1 to $2 a day at the Van Nuys flyaway fly·a·way

in the parking lots and terminal roadways, and at Van Nuys, we're trying to discourage people from storing RVs and campers long term,'' said Airport Commissioner Michael DiGirolamo.

Airport leaders say Van Nuys flyaway's current rate of $1 per day attracted many nontravelers who would store vehicles in the 2,000-space lot for a real bargain.

``We know that the increase is small, but our issue was that we wanted to have a conservative increase at this point because we don't want to turn patrons away,'' said Van Nuys Airport spokesman Richard French Richard French (June 20, 1792 - May 1, 1854) was a U.S. Representative from Kentucky.

Born near Boonesborough, Kentucky, French attended private schools. He studied law. He was admitted to the bar in 1820 and commenced practice in Winchester, Kentucky.

Two dollars a day might not be enough, though, to keep away car salesman Russ Ballew, who uses the parking lot to store cars for sale.

``It's pretty cheap here,'' he said Tuesday while parking a Dodge truck that he was getting ready to sell to a Westlake Village wholesale auto dealer. ``I bring the cars up here from the South Bay, store them here, and pay $3.50 to take the bus to LAX, where I have one of my guys pick me up.''

LAX's Central Terminal Area parking fee increase is the first since 1990. Van Nuys hasn't boosted its rates since 1984.

But it wasn't the length of time since the previous increase that upset Gerald A. Silver, a member of the Airport Citizens Advisory Committee Council.

``Charging people more to park won't work,'' said Silver, who is also president of Homeowners of Encino. ``They should take the available land at the Air National Guard site and let residents use that for storing their boats, campers and RVs. They need a long-term storage lot that solves their problem.''

L.A. World Airports commissioned a study in 1998 to investigate existing and future traffic conditions and to develop a series of ground transportation improvements. A rate increase was one of the improvements the study recommended to reduce congestion and improve parking that could be done quickly and at low capital cost, officials said.

Van Nuys Airport officials are drawing up plans for expansion there, French said. Over the next two months, officials will study how much traffic is turned away every day due to the lack of parking spots taken by RVs, French said.

``We'll get a more accurate gauge of how important the parking spots are to our customers,'' he said.
