a three-mile segment of the Pacific Crest Trail The Pacific Crest Trail (also known as the Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail) is a long-distance mountain hiking and equestrian trail that runs from the United States border with Mexico to its border with Canada and follows the highest portion of the Sierra Nevada and  that now follows Agua Dulce Agua Dulce is Spanish for "sweet water". It also refers to various locations:

In an appropriations bill for Department of the Interior programs, Congress allocated money to begin a $5 million to $6 million project to realign the trail between Sierra Highway Sierra Highway is a road in Southern California, United States. It runs from Tunnel Station near the north limit of the City of Los Angeles, where it intersects with San Fernando Road and Foothill Boulevard, as well as Interstate 5, and continues north to Mojave, mostly paralleling  and Escondido Canyon Road. The segment is considered one of the most dangerous of the 2,650-mile trail, which runs from Mexico to Canada.

``This is one of my top environmental priorities this year,'' said Rep. Howard ``Buck'' McKeon, R-Santa Clarita, who sought the funding. ``The Pacific Crest Trail is an interstate trail that allows hikers to enjoy many beautiful natural areas in California, Oregon and Washington. But they shouldn't have to dodge cars in order to do it.''

The bill requires the U.S. Forest Service to develop a plan for the realignment re·a·lign

by March. The Forest Service will work with the Pacific Crest Trail Association, a 2,600-member volunteer organization, to identify the optimum new route and begin acquiring land.

The trail association is hoping the federal funding will encourage land conservancy organizations to work with the Forest Service to help acquire the property quickly.

``I hope this can be wrapped up in a couple of years,'' said Bob Ballou, executive director of the Pacific Crest Trail Association.

The bill includes language directing the Forest Service to make the Pacific Crest Trail a high priority. Supporters of the trail are hoping it signals a federal commitment to acquire property for 300 miles of the trail that either have simple easements EASEMENTS, estates. ``This scratches the surfaces,'' Ballou said of the $1.5 million. ``It gets us started on the most dangerous section.''

The section to be realigned in Agua Dulce starts where the trail emerges from Vasquez Rocks County Park. The trail then follows Agua Dulce Canyon Road until it crosses Sierra Highway, where it returns to the mountains.

Trail supporters point to the commitment Congress made to the Appalachian National Scenic Trail Appalachian National Scenic Trail: see Appalachian Trail.
