FEDEX SIGNS EXCLUSIVE CONTRACT WITH GENERAL MOTORS

 MEMPHIS, Tenn., Jan. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Federal Express Corporation (NYSE: FDX) announced today that it has signed a multi-year contract with General Motors Corporation to be the automaker's exclusive U.S. express transportation carrier.
 Under the contract, which includes all GM divisions and GM subsidiaries Hughes Aircraft Company, Saturn and Electronic Data Systems (EDS). Federal Express will provide time-definite door-to-door delivery for all domestic Overnight Letters and packages weighing up to 30 pounds for GM's North American Operations and up to 150 pounds for all other GM operations, including service parts to the dealer network. The contract excludes production parts.
 "The world's largest automotive manufacturer and the world's largest express carrier are now allies," said William J. Razzouk, Executive Vice President-Global Customer Services. "Our strategies are similar. We are both committed to quality, to reducing cycle times, and to improving our products and services. The ultimate winner is the consumer."
 One important aspect of the contract with GM and its subsidiaries calls for a joint continuous improvement team. This team will focus on key areas such as reducing cycle time and transactional costs.
 Federal Express is the first winner of the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award in the service category. Headquartered in Memphis, Federal Express has an integrated air-ground network consisting of 98,000 employees, 467 aircraft and 30,000 vans. The company delivers 2 million items each working day to 187 countries worldwide.
