FEDERAL FUNDING EXPECTED FOR AREA.

Two bills expected to be signed by President Clinton soon will provide $10.3 million for enhancing flood control and protect the environment in Ventura County, as well as $6 million to upgrade aerial firefighting Aerial firefighting is a method to combat wildfires using aircraft. ``This is obviously not just strictly a Ventura County issue,'' said Tom Pfeifer, Gallegly's press secretary. ``But Ventura County is susceptible to wildfire that require the MAFF units.''

The energy and water appropriations bill would provide:

$4million for continuation of the Santa Paula Santa Paula (săn`tə pôl`ə), city (1990 pop. 25,062), Ventura co., S Calif., on the Santa Clara River in a fertile valley that yields citrus fruits, avocados, vegetables, flowers, nursery products, and walnuts; laid out 1875, inc.  flood control project, which enhances the safety of the city and most of its schools.

$3.2million to dredge the Channel Islands Harbor, using the excess sand to replenish the beaches south of Port Hueneme.

$2.7million to continue dredging the entrance of Ventura Harbor.

It was remade in 1997 as part of the revived The Outer Limits series with a minor title change.  to pump sand out of recreational harbors countywide, thereby reducing the need for future dredging.

$100,000 for an environmental impact study of sediment in Mugu Lagoon and alternatives for restoring the estuary.

``The problem with sand and the need for dredging out on the coast has been a very sticky issue with the (Army) Corps of Engineers,'' Pfeifer said. ``It's been an ongoing problem. Hopefully this will start to address it in a meaningful way.''

A White House spokesman, who requested anonymity, said Clinton had not received the bills yet.

But he added, ``There is no indication of a veto threat on either of those bills.''
