FEDERAL EXPRESS RECEIVES SUPPLEMENTAL TYPE CERTIFICATE FOR HEAVYWEIGHT B727-200 STAGE 3 NOISE REDUCTION KIT

FEDERAL EXPRESS RECEIVES SUPPLEMENTAL TYPE CERTIFICATE
FOR HEAVYWEIGHT B727-200 STAGE 3 NOISE REDUCTION KIT
MEMPHIS, Tenn. Sept. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Federal Express Corporation (NYSE: FDX) announced today it has received Supplemental Type Certification from the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration for a new Heavyweight Stage 3 noise reduction kit for JT8D-15 powered Boeing 727- 200 aircraft. The new kit allows high-gross weight 727-200s to comply fully with the quieter F.A.R. Stage 3 noise rules at takeoff weights up to 199,000 lbs. The announcement was made following the arrival in Memphis of the company's first revenue B727-200 flight with the kit installed, the culmination of a 5 year development effort.
"Certification of this new noise reduction kit will allow Federal Express to operate its B727-200 fleet beyond the year 2000," said Ron Wickens, vice president of engineering for Federal Express. "We are extremely proud of our development team, which has worked diligently to make this product a reality," Wickens added.
Developed by Federal in collaboration with Pratt & Whitney and with technical support from the Boeing Company, the Heavyweight Stage 3 Kit incorporates Pratt & Whitney internal exhaust gas mixers and respaced inlet guidevanes, increased area extended tailpipes, modified thrust reversers and engine pylons and various acoustic treatments to reduce the exhaust and fan noise inherent to the B727-200s JT8D engines. Recent improvements in the Kit design eliminate the need to enter the engines before or during Kit installation and provide for both Fan-duct and Chin-mount CSD oil cooler configurations. The kits will also have no discernible impact on fuel flow, thrust performance or aircraft handling characteristics.
In addition to utilizing the kit for its own fleet, Federal Express is offering the Stage 3 Kits to other airlines through its Federal Express Aviation Services, Inc. (FEASI) subsidiary. The new Heavyweight Kit will join the existing Federal Express light-takeoff-weight Stage 3 Kits for B727-100s and Low-gross weight B727-200s, which have been available since 1989.
"The Heavyweight Kits will be available for customer delivery beginning in the second quarter of 1992 at a price of $2.45 million," said Tom Morgan, director of FEASI's Aviation Products Group. "B727-200 owners and operators may now enjoy the benefits of Stage 3 operation at a small fraction of the cost of reengining or new replacement aircraft.
Two Federal Express B727-200s with Heavyweight Stage 3 Kits will be in revenue service this fall, and will join the 33 Stage 3 B727-100s already in service with Federal. Federal Express Stage 3 Kits are now in service with 10 customers. Firm orders for 73 kits have been received to date, of which 60 have been delivered.
