FED Corporation Announces World's First OLED-on-Silicon Integrated Circuit Miniature Flat Panel Display.HOPEWELL JUNCTION, N.Y.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 19, 1998--FED Corporation today announced the world's first Active Matrix Organic Light Emitting Diode See LED. (AMOLED AMOLED Active Matrix Organic Light Emitting Diode AMOLED Active Matrix Organic Led ) video display built on a silicon integrated circuit. The VGA resolution (640 x 480 pixel) monochrome video display was publicly demonstrated today for the first time at the Lehman Brothers TECH EXPO '98 in New York City New York City: see New York, city. New York City City (pop., 2000: 8,008,278), southeastern New York, at the mouth of the Hudson River. The largest city in the U.S. , and will be demonstrated later this week at the Society for Information Display Conference in Anaheim, CA. The display exhibits 32 gray levels and full video rate performance. FED Corporation Executive Vice President Susan K. Jones commented that "This first-ever demonstration represents a major step for miniature flat panel displays and OLEDs. Molecular film OLEDs have the potential to be manufactured at very low cost on conventional integrated circuit chips, have excellent video and computer performance, are very lightweight, consume very low power with high resolution and high luminance capability, do not require separate light sources, and can be produced with full color capability. This combination of high performance and low cost makes the AMOLED on silicon the ideal component of a multitude of portable/wearable computer applications." FED Corporation also demonstrated prototype SXGA (Super XGA) A screen resolution of 1280x1024 pixels. SXGA is commonly used on standard monitors, but provides a 1.25:1 aspect ratio, compared to the more common 1.33:1 (4:3) ratio. SXGA+ has a 1400x1050 resolution, which is an exact 1.33:1 ratio. See PC display modes. (1280 x 1024 pixels) and HDTV (High Definition TV) A set of digital television (DTV) standards that offer the highest resolution and sharpest picture. Although some HDTV sets are available in standard (rather square) screen sizes, the overwhelming majority of sets are wide screen, which eliminates (1920 x 1080 pixels) OLED displays with fixed images on silicon substrates to demonstrate the technology's high resolution capability. The Company is targeting introduction of a low power consumption 0.78-in. diagonal SXGA monochrome video product later this year, and color displays are simultaneously under development. Current products under development are designed to exploit the company's proprietary field emission display (hardware) field emission display - (FED) A type of flat panel display in which field emitting cathodes bombard a phosphor coating causing it to emit light. A field emission display is similar to a cathode ray tube but only a few millimeters thick.
