Astronautics was established in 1959 and is a major supplier of avionics equipment to airlines, Boeing, Airbus, the U.S. for the successful pursuit of an Air Force Wright Laboratory R&D contract to develop field emitter displays for military aircraft. Wright Laboratory's Dr. Darrell Hopper and Captain Dan Monticello led the development of this Air Force program. It represents the first Air Force funded program targeted at utilizing field emitter display technology in military cockpits. The heart of the military display is FED Corporation's recently developed field emission display (hardware) field emission display - (FED) A type of flat panel display in which field emitting cathodes bombard a phosphor coating causing it to emit light. A field emission display is similar to a cathode ray tube but only a few millimeters thick.
