    FEBRUARY SALES INCREASE 8.4 PERCENT FOR THE MAY DEPARTMENT STORES
    ST. LOUIS, March 5 /PRNewswire/ -- The May Department Stores Company (NYSE: MA) today reported preliminary sales were $629.3 million for the four-week period ended Feb. 29, an increase of 8.4 percent from sales of $580.3 million during the similar fiscal period last year.  The February reporting period is the first month of fiscal 1992 for May.
    Department store sales for February were $522.5 million, up 7.0 percent or $34.2 million from last year's similar four-week sales. Sales for Payless ShoeSource totaled $106.8 million, an increase of 16.1 percent or $14.8 million.

    (A) Store-for-store sales represent sales of those stores open during both years.
    Sales have been restated to exclude the sales of stores which have been closed and not replaced.  Total revenues, including sales of nonreplaced closed stores and finance charge revenue, were $659 million in February 1992 and $628 million in February 1991.
    The May Department Stores Company is the largest department store retailer in the United States, operating 318 department stores and 3,298 Payless ShoeSource stores.
