FEATURE PRESENTATION: MILESTONE'S THROW A.V.'S NEWCOMB GOES FOR WIN NO. 200 TONIGHT.Byline: Ramona Shelburne Ramona Shelburne is an American sports journalist currently writing for the Los Angeles Daily News. Shelburne was born and raised in Los Angeles, California. She attended El Camino Real High School in Woodland Hills, California where she was a class valedictorian. Staff Writer It seems fitting Brent Newcomb goes for his 200th career victory by the book, because that's the way he's run his program for 26 years. In another way, the Antelope Valley This article is about the Los Angeles County region. For the census-designated place in Wyoming, see Antelope Valley-Crestview, Wyoming. But in the summer, old friend Lin Parker, the coach at Littlerock and a 19-year Golden League veteran, reminded Newcomb of three forfeits in 1993, making the season-opening victory over Bakersfield victory No. 197, technically speaking. ``My dad and Lin just needle each other with little jokes all the time, so I guess my dad owes him down the road,'' said Antelope Valley offensive coordinator An offensive coordinator typically refers to the coach on a football team in the National Football League or College football who is in charge of the offense. This position aids the head coach by designing and scripting plays, delegating work to offensive position coaches during Brandon Newcomb, the coach's son. And so, technically speaking, Brent Newcomb goes for his 200th career victory tonight against four-time Southern Section Div. I champion Loyola of Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850. . ``My dad has always been the type to cross the T's and dot the I's, he's not a guy who tries to slip something through,'' Brandon Newcomb said. ``... Newcomb might worry about what could be construed as a stain to his reputation, but to those who have known him longest and best, he always has been a class act. Even the incident in question - an ineligible player who appeared in the games for about three minutes "Three Minutes" is the 46th episode of Lost. It is the twenty-second episode of the second season. The episode was directed by Stephen Williams, and written by Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz. It first aired on May 17, 2006 on ABC. - shows Newcomb's integrity and the respect opposing coaches have for him. The forfeits would've knocked Antelope Valley out of the playoffs, but Golden League coaches voted to allow the team in. ``He kind of keeps people on the sly sly adj. sli·er also sly·er, sli·est also sly·est 1. I hope he gets to enjoy that (if A.V. wins against Loyola). ... A lot of us can only wish to have his longevity.'' Perhaps the highest praise comes from Newcomb's players. ``He's a real good guy. I figure if it weren't for Coach Newcomb, I don't think I'd be playing right now,'' senior fullback Aaron Wilson Aaron Wilson (b. Clinical medicine adverb Fast, quickly, immediately, schnell, vite Lab medicine noun : 450 Combined wins by Loyola coach Steve Grady (251) and Antelope Valley's Brent Newcomb (199). Why Loyola will win: The Cubs of Los Angeles responded to a disappointing loss to Venice in Week 2 with a shutout against Muir of Pasadena last week. The Venice game seemed to be a wake-up call for Loyola, and it won't want to fall back to .500. Why Antelope Valley will win: The players are inspired to give Newcomb his 200th career victory. The defense hasn't allowed a touchdown all year, and RB Kreig Peters and FB Aaron Wilson are combining for more than 200 rushing yards a game. Last week: Antelope Valley beat Victor Valley 18-0; Loyola beat Muir 45-0. Perspective: Loyola has a 9-2-1 record all time against Antelope Valley, but the Antelopes were a blocked field goal away from pulling the upset last year on the Cubs' home field. Loyola eventually won 21-19, but not before A.V. rallied from the 21-0 deficit. Outlook: Both schools are four-time Southern Section champions and have legendary coaches, but it's the players who will decide this game. Loyola has more depth, but Antelope Valley has run over its first three opponents. Just go watch the game, it's too close to call. In the United States of America, Notre Dame , but Palmdale needs him to do better than 49 yards passing to have a chance this week. Key stat: 5 Difference in offensive yards between Palmdale (292) and Notre Dame (297) in last week's 35-21 victory by Notre Dame. Notre Dame also had more turnovers (3-2), but a blocked punt led to an early touchdown. Why Upland will win: Upland has outscored its opponents 123-28 this season. Palmdale allowed 35 points to Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks and will have to shut down Upland's high-powered offense. Why Palmdale will win: Notre Dame was the first tough opponent Palmdale has played all season, and the Falcons will be better prepared for the intensity. Coach Jeff Williams has focused this week's practice on execution and fundamentals to avoid the mistakes that cost Palmdale last week. Last week: Palmdale lost 35-21 to Notre Dame; Upland defeated Canyon Springs of Moreno Valley Moreno Valley (mərē`nō), city (1990 pop. 118,779), Riverside co., S Calif., inc. 1984. In 1990, Moreno Valley was California's fastest-growing city, with a population increase of more than 300% between 1980 and 1990, but major reductions 58-12. Perspective: Palmdale rallied from a 7-0 deficit last year to defeat Upland 21-14. Senior QB Jacob McCravey complete five of his final six passes, including two touchdowns. Outlook: Upland is the No. 5 team in the Southern Section Div. II poll and vastly improved from last season. Palmdale must recover from last week's disappointing loss, but it certainly has the talent to win the game. If the Falcons have turnover problems again, Upland will make them pay. LANCASTER (1-2) at DESERT (1-2) 7 p.m. Player to watch: J.J. Guillory, RB, Lancaster Guillory is averaging 12.1 yards a carry this season and is the Eagles' top offensive playmaker play·mak·er n. He broke runs of 45 and 57 yards last week against Chaminade, and scooped up a fumble and ran it another 20 yards to turn a potential turnover into a big gain. Key stat: 9 Pass attempts last week for both Lancaster's Bobby Thomas and Desert's Ryan Gava. Why Lancaster will win: The Eagles are averaging 264 yards rushing on the ground, and four different players have gained over 100 yards. QB Bobby Thomas looks increasingly more confident running new coach Jeff Cortez' Delaware wing-T offense. Thomas gained 97 yards on nine carries and threw for a touchdown last week. Why Desert will win: Senior TB Milt Davis Milt Davis was a defensive back who played four seasons in the NFL for the Baltimore Colts. Last week: Lancaster lost 39-26 to Chaminade of West Hills; Desert lost 40-13 to Quartz Hill. Perspective: Desert beat Lancaster 28-23 last year in a game remembered more for a strange incident involving accusations by Desert that Lancaster vandalized its locker room. Desert High principal Charlie Hildebrand later apologized to Lancaster High officials after discovering the accusations were false. Outlook: Desert went 13-1 last season behind standouts Rudy Burgess BURGESS. In England, the word is sometimes applied to all the inhabitants of a borough, who are called burgesses sometimes it (now at Arizona State), Jason Napoleon, Nick Gava and Aaron Breismeister. But all four have graduated, and Desert's best players this season - LBs Derek Shingledecker and Josh McDonald - are juniors. Lancaster has improved each week and should have too much talent for a young Desert team. REDLANDS EAST VALLEY (2-0-1) at QUARTZ HILL (1-2) 7 p.m. Player to watch: Nate Johns, QB, Redlands East Valley Versatile QB rushed for more than 1,000 yards last season. Quartz Hill will have to contain him to have a chance. Key stat: 270 Average weight of Redlands East Valley's offensive line. Why Redlands East Valley will win: Despite last week's tie, Redlands East Valley is the No. 6 team in the Southern Section Div. I poll. Why Quartz Hill will win: The Rebels finally forced more turnovers than they allowed last week, and FB Ben Albaum reaped the rewards by converting three short touchdowns. If Quartz Hill can hang onto the ball, Albaum and RB Quinn Porter are a dangerous backfield combination. Last week: Redlands East Valley tied Riverside Poly 22-22; Quartz Hill beat Desert 40-13 Perspective: Redlands East Valley was 1-48 until last season, when it went 8-4-1 and made the school's first postseason appearance. This game was scheduled during the 2001 season, when Redlands East Valley was 1-9. Redlands East Valley won this matchup 20-13 last season after Johns scored a touchdown with 13 seconds remaining. LITTLEROCK (0-3) at SERRANO ser·ra·no n. pl. ser·ra·nos A cultivar of the tropical pepper Capsicum annuum having small, blunt, highly pungent red or green fruit used in cooking. (3-0) 7 p.m. Player to watch: Carl Uhl, QB, Serrano The junior QB is the key to Serrano's offense. Littlerock will have to shut him down to have a chance. Key stat: 1 Number of turnovers for Littlerock last week, a significant improvement from its first two games (3.5 a game). Why Littlerock will win: The Lobos scored their first points of the year last week on touchdown passes from first-year starter Travis Calloway. Those plays should give him confidence after throwing four interceptions in Littlerock's first three games. Why Serrano will win: Serrano of Phelan beat Barstow 34-6, and Littlerock lost to Barstow 40-12 last week. Last week: Serrano defeated Indio 37-13; Littlerock lost to Barstow 40-12. Perspective: Serrano was the Southern Section Div. VIII runner-up last season, and Littlerock has been outscored 108-12 this season. Serrano won this game 29-7 last season, holding the Lobos to five first downs. Outlook: Littlerock has struggled with its new offense and with turnovers (8). Serrano has outscored its opponents 94-26 this season. No. 2 CANYON (3-0) at HIGHLAND (1-1-1) 7 p.m. Player to watch: Jeff Briscoe, OL, Canyon Briscoe's blocking must help offset Highland's size and power on the defensive line, always one of the Bulldogs' strengths. Key stat: 11.4 Yards per carry for Canyon RB Louis Montano (area-best 457 yards on 40 attempts), the second-highest total among regional large-school RBs with 300 yards or more. Why Canyon will win: The way the team is rolling, Canyon would a favorite against just about anyone. The team is averaging 46 points and hasn't given up more than one touchdown in a game. Canyon is coming off its most well-balanced victory, against Etiwanda last week. Last week: Canyon defeated Etiwanda 48-7; Highland tied Peninsula of Palos Verdes Palos Verdes is often used to refer to a group of coastal cities on the Palos Verdes Peninsula in the Los Angeles/South Bay area of California. This affluent bedroom community is known for its dramatic views, good schools [1] extensive horse trails [2] 14-14. Why Highland will win: The team plays solid defense, particularly in the secondary, which held Peninsula to 41 yards passing last week and has allowed an average of 63.3 yards a game. If Highland can keep the score low, force turnovers and avoid silly mistakes, the team has enough talent to pull an upset. Perspective: Canyon is 9-3 against Golden League opponents since 1997, including six consecutive victories (three over Highland). Canyon leads the Highland series 6-1. Outlook: Canyon looked sharp last week, when every reserve on the bench got into the game for at least one play for the third consecutive game. With such skill-position talent and a hard-hitting defense, Canyon would have to do a major backslide back·slide intr.v. back·slid , back·slid·ing, back·slides To revert to sin or wrongdoing, especially in religious practice. back to fall against an unranked opponent. Paraclete must control Celestine and rebound from a disappointing 39-20 loss to Garces.
