FEATURE/Novotel begins construction on site of former U.S. Consulate in Da Nang, Vietnam.


SYDNEY, Australia--(BUSINESS WIRE FEATURES)--Aug. 17, 1995-- Ground was broken yesterday on the site of the former U.S. Consulate in Da Nang Da Nang (dənăng`, dän äng), formerly Tourane (trăn`, –rän`), city (1990 est. pop. , Vietnam, signaling the start of construction for the city's first international-standard hotel, the Novotel Tourane Da Nang.

 for the 200-room hotel was performed by Australia's Ambassador to Vietnam, Susan Boyd. The hotel is scheduled to be completed by early 1997. The facade of the U.S. Consulate will be retained in the development, as will two villas originally constructed as part of the U.S. compound.

The hotel is a joint-venture between an Australian company, Leda Holdings Pty Ltd. and local authorities. It will be managed by Accor Asia Pacific (AAPC AAPC American Academy of Professional Coders (National Organization headquartered in Salt Lake City, Utah)

Da Nang is one of Vietnam's most historic cities. The French landed on Da Nang's China Beach in 1853, and the city was a major center for the Americans during the Vietnam war Vietnam War, conflict in Southeast Asia, primarily fought in South Vietnam between government forces aided by the United States and guerrilla forces aided by North Vietnam. . With nearby China Beach one of the country's most famous landmarks, the Novotel Tourane Da Nang is expected to be a popular base for tourists as well as business travelers. The hotel will have conference facilities, a business center, restaurants and a nightclub, a swimming pool and gym, and souvenir shops located in the restored villas.

AAPC is Australia's and the Asia Pacific's largest hotel company with 87 hotels totaling 15,000 rooms. AAPC is also the largest international hotel group operating in Vietnam. The company operates Sofitel Hotels in Hanoi and Dalat, and a Mercure Hotel in Saigon. Eight other hotels in Vietnam are either committed or under development.

In addition, AAPC operates two hotels in Cambodia, and is scheduled to debut later this year in Myanmar with the Novotel Mandalay, and in Laos, with a hotel in Vientiane.

Accor Asia Pacific operates hotels under Sofitel, Novotel, Mercure, Ibis ibis (ī`bĭs), common name for wading birds with long, slender, decurved bills, found in the warmer regions of both hemispheres. The body is usually about 2 ft (61 cm) long. Most ibises nest in colonies.  and Formule 1 brand names in Australia, Asia and the South Pacific, as well as under the Quality Hotels and Inns names in Australia. Properties are located in Australia, Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia, Korea, Malaysia, New Caledonia, New Zealand New Zealand (zē`lənd), island country (2005 est. pop. 4,035,000), 104,454 sq mi (270,534 sq km), in the S Pacific Ocean, over 1,000 mi (1,600 km) SE of Australia.
