FEATURE/New ANA book protects advertisers and agencies from legal pitfalls.

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE FEATURES)--Sept. 19, 1995--The intricacies of restrictive covenants, interactive media, intellectual property and even sexual discrimination are now fully explained in the Association of National Advertisers' (ANA) new book entitled, "Please Be Ad-vised: The Legal Reference Guide for the Advertising Executive."

This new guidebook, written by Douglas Wood, executive partner at Hall Dickler Kent Friedman & Wood LLP and one of America's leading advertising lawyers, is designed to assist marketing and advertising professionals in understanding many of the legal issues associated with the advertising industry today.

Wood's books includes more than 20 sample contracts, from non-compete clauses to television production contracts, and features the first comprehensive "new media" contract for outlets such as the World Wide Web.

"This book is an important legal reference tool for any advertiser or agency," said ANA President John J. Sarsen, Jr. "It provides hands-on guidance tailored for anyone in the business -- from senior marketing executives to top agency managers. And, for those who study advertising, `Please Be Ad-vised' is a valuable resource, packed with examples of common problems and practical solutions." The book explores critical issues such as puffery, agency/client relations and network clearance in comprehensible language supported by case studies. Wood provides background for each issue and outlines possible pitfalls. "We saw a real need in the business community at large for a definitive guide on advertising law," said Wood. "Many unnecessary problems could be averted if the law were codified and accessible."

Wood is also co-author of "Legal Problems in Advertising," and an arbitrator for the American Arbitration Association on controversies in the advertising and broadcasting industries. He is a frequent speaker on advertising law issues for the ANA, the American Association of Advertising Agencies and the American Marketing Association. Hall Dickler Kent Friedman & Wood LLP is a New York-based law firm specializing in advertising, promotion and new media law.

"Please Be Ad-vised" is $59.95 and available through the Association of National Advertisers. The ANA offers books, periodicals and surveys on marketing, advertising, research, promotions, media, agency relations, legislative and governmental issues. To order any ANA publication, call 212/697-5950.

The ANA is the industry's oldest trade association and the only association dedicated to serving the interests of corporations that advertise regionally and nationally. The Association's membership is a cross-section of American industry, consisting of manufacturers, retailers, service providers and financial institutions. Representing more than 5,300 separate advertising entities, these member companies market their products to consumers and to other companies. The ANA represents the needs of its members through advertising industry and legislative leadership, information resources, professional development and industry-wide networking.
