Business/Technology Editors

FEATURE...

LEXINGTON, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE FEATURES)--Sept. 29, 2000

At 5:00 AM, Friday, September 29, the Logica yacht reached Boston after successfully completing the first leg of the BT Global Challenge 2000-2001 in seventh position. The yacht was at sea for 18 days and 18 hours. During this 3,200-mile leg from Southampton (England), the yacht was involved in several incidents that tested the crew's skills, nerve and stamina to the maximum and under the most challenging of conditions. Despite the difficulties they encountered, the crew arrived in Boston in good spirits Adv. 1. in good spirits - without losing equilibrium; "she took all his criticism in stride"

An Eventful First Leg

For Logica reaching dry land signaled the end of an eventful leg. The yacht got off to a flying start scooping one of the first prizes of the Race when it led the fleet out of the Western Solent. The crew was awarded the Musto prize for being the first yacht to pass Hurst Castle.

Just two days into the Race, Logica received a massive setback when they collided with a fishing boat. The incident happened just before midnight south of Lizard Point Liz·ard Point or Liz·ard Head

. Fortunately, no one was injured in the accident but the boat sustained minor damage to the hull including compression and filler damage and rippling to the deck edge. Skipper Jeremy Troughton praised the swift action of helmsman Adam Tuffnell in helping avert disaster. The accident knocked them out of the running for a few days as they slipped back from middle of the fleet to 11th place. They quickly moved back up and fluctuated between fifth and third positions.

Logica's trials were not over as the first storm of the Race hit the fleet, knocking them and Spirit of Hong Kong down. Two of Logica's crew received minor injuries and were confined to their bunks.

But life was to remain far from calm for the crew of Logica as just 24 hours and 215 miles from Boston, Race crew volunteer Jasmine Georgiou was airlifted to hospital in Nova Scotia with suspected appendicitis Appendicitis Definition

Now the crew of Logica will be able to put the events of Leg One behind them and enjoy a well-deserved rest before turning their minds to Leg Two.
