The company now offers a low per-minute rate of $2.99 set-up, $3.28 per minute for short calls while continuing its $15 maximum charge per call. "We want airline passengers to be as comfortable with the Airfone service as they are with their cellular, home and office telephone," said Katherine Harless, GTE Airfone president. "By reducing the price, we hope people will consider inflight telephone service a reasonable and valuable way to communicate with co-workers, business associates, clients, family and friends. "Just as you would use your car, home or office phone, the Airfone service can help you when you're late, when you forget, when you remember, when things go right, when things go wrong, when you want to stay in touch," Harless said. In May, GTE introduced the industry's first flat-rate calling plan for inflight telephone calls. For $15 maximum, airline passengers can talk as long as they like on the Airfone service. The new per-minute rate, which went into effect Nov. 1, is for people who want to pay less for a one or two minute call, Harless said.
