On the 135th anniversary of the Overland Campaign The Overland Campaign, also known as Grant's Overland Campaign and the Wilderness Campaign, was a series of battles fought in Virginia during May and June 1864, in the American Civil War. Lt. Gen. Ulysses S. , more than 10,000 Civil War reenactors will converge near Brandy Station, 60 miles southwest of Washington, DC, to recreate a number of the legendary 1864 clashes between the troops of Robert E. Lee and Ulysses S. Grant.

In a poetic twist for this timely event, the man who inspired Father's Day was a Civil War veteran. In 1906, Mrs. John B. Dodd of Washington proposed the idea of setting a day aside to honor fathers because of her appreciation of her own dad, Henry Jackson Smart, a veteran of the Civil War and a widower who had raised six children. The first Father's Day took place in 1910 in Spokane, WA, and in 1966 President Johnson signed the proclamation making it a national event.

The reenactors, from around the nation, will converge on this historic spot to portray key battles -- Cold Harbor, Yellow Tavern, The Wilderness -- in what was the Civil War's bloodiest campaign, including an extraordinary dawn attack Saturday morning. In addition, there will also be lectures, author book signings, candlelit can·dle·lit

tours, fife and drum concerts, cavalry competitions and medical and artillery demonstrations.

The increasingly popular Civil War reenactments have expanded in recent years beyond a core group of male Civil War military buffs to include many women who will be present in the "civilian camp" at Brandy Station in period costume offering demonstrations of many period domestic activities.
