Both the wooden figures and the Great Lakes route were inspired by a children's book, "Paddle-to-the-Sea," about a little boy who dreams of having a wooden figure he carved travel along the Great Lakes and out to the sea.

"When we share our stories of adventure and childhood dreams, others share their goals and dreams," said Bancroft. "That's what this adventure was all about -- creating a meaningful dialogue about the pursuit of dreams with people across the Great Lakes and on our Web site. We hope people worldwide continue a dialogue about their dreams through yourexpedition.com and in their own communities."

During the adventure, Bancroft and Arnesen traveled approximately 2,000 miles (3,218 km) by kayak, ore boat, fishing boat and other modes of water transportation from Lake Superior to the St. Lawrence Seaway. The explorers journeyed through Lake Superior, Lake Erie, Lake Huron and Lake Ontario and stopped in communities such as Duluth, Minn. and Cleveland, Ohio to meet face-to-face with people and share stories about the pursuit of dreams.

Women, kids, Girl Scouts and others met Bancroft and Arnesen and paddled with them at public canoeing events called "Paddle to Your Dreams" in cities including: Detroit, Mich.; Cleveland; Buffalo, N.Y. and Toronto, Ontario. Wilderness Inquiry -- a nonprofit organization Nonprofit Organization

About the Bancroft Arnesen Expedition

As young girls, Bancroft and Arnesen read a recount of Sir Ernest Shackleton's legendary attempt to cross Antarctica that stirred their imaginations. Despite being completely unaware of one another, they both declared the same childhood dream: to ski across Antarctica. Bancroft and Arnesen made history on Feb. 11, 2001 by becoming the first women to ski across Antarctica's landmass land·mass

Along the way, the former schoolteachers used the Internet and a satellite phone to communicate with people in more than 150 countries, including more than three million schoolchildren, motivating and inspiring them to achieve their own dreams. The expedition Web site, www.yourexpedition.com, received more than 23 million hits during the traverse.

During the expedition, Bancroft, Arnesen and yourexpedition, the company that supported the women's crossing of Antarctica, received tens-of-thousands of messages of support from people who were inspired by Bancroft and Arnesen's pursuit of their childhood dream. Based on this overwhelming response, they created Bancroft Arnesen Explore to interact with people through adventure and online to share their inspirational stories of exploration.
