The First Book Community Enrichment Award recognizes the individual who has made a heroic contribution to First Book's efforts to give disadvantaged children the opportunity to read and own their first new books. Mr Tolworthy has been a tremendous ambassador for First Book and was instrumental in launching the First Book national partnership with Barnes & Noble, Inc., in 1993. It is through his leadership that First Book achieved a milestone in 1997: the distribution of over 1.0 million new books to hundreds of thousands of at-risk children in 170 communities nationwide. "Tom is an extraordinary individual whose personal dedication has improved the lives of hundreds of thousands of children through First Book," said Peter Gold. Mr Tolworthy's leadership has inspired the involvement of legions of volunteers, including a host of Barnes & Noble employees who serve on First Book local boards in communities across the country.
