FPL wants consumers to know that a trip away from home represents a chance to conserve energy and keep bills down. A few simple steps can help lower energy use and reduce the risk of mold and mildew build-up should the home remain unoccupied for most of the summer.

No matter if you're enjoying a short getaway or an all-summer journey, the following tips can help control your energy bill:

-- Set your thermostat to 85 degrees and turn the thermostat fan

switch to "AUTO." This setting helps your central air

conditioner control humidity more effectively.

-- Leave interior doors (including closet doors) open for proper

ventilation.

-- Install a new A/C filter. Consider using a high performance

pleated filter.

-- Adjust your humidistat (if you have one) to the proper setting

as recommended by your A/C contractor. A humidistat is not

recommended by FPL because misuse or incorrect settings result

in a high electric bill.

-- Turn off your water heaters.

-- Turn your refrigerator to the warmest setting.

-- Use timers or daylight sensors if you leave lighting on for

security reasons.

-- If you have a pool, turn off the heater at the circuit

breaker, and set the filter pump timer to run six hours a day.
