Members of New York's bravest, along with Rescue Hero Billy Blazes(TM), arrived on their fire trucks to provide a special fire prevention and safety lesson to the public. Additionally, the latest FDNY Rescue Heroes line-up, designed to promote fire safety, was formally unveiled.

The new FDNY Rescue Heroes figures and vehicle are the result of an ongoing partnership with Fisher-Price, the FDNY and Toys "R" Us that began in 2000. These new FDNY figures and vehicle, exclusive to Toys "R" Us stores nationwide, have been developed to promote FDNY's important fire safety messages with a portion of the profits being donated to the FDNY's Fire Safety Education Fund.

"We have the most capable, highly trained, and best equipped fire fighting fire fighting, the use of strategy, personnel, and apparatus to extinguish, to confine, or to escape from fire. Fire-Fighting Strategy

Fire fighting strategy involves the following basic procedures: arriving at the scene of the fire as rapidly as
force in the nation, but we recognize that the most cost effective tools we have to fight fires are education and public awareness," said Nicholas Scoppetta Nicholas Scoppetta (born 1932 in New York, New York) currently serves as the 31st Fire Commissioner of the City of New York. He was appointed to that position by Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg on January 1, 2002. , Fire Commissioner City of New York. "Having teamed up with Fisher-Price and Toys "R" Us to create these figures has blossomed into a wonderful partnership that has raised an overwhelming amount of money for the Fire Safety Education Fund. But more importantly, Rescue Heroes has helped to increase public fire safety awareness."

Introduced in 1998, the Rescue Heroes are a team of real-life, action figure heroes like firefighters, police officers, construction workers, mountain rangers, paramedics, etc. who provide positive role models for kids. As a result of their growing popularity, in 2000, Fisher-Price approached the FDNY to brainstorm ways that Rescue Heroes might become "spokespeople" for fire safety.

In May of 2001, Fisher-Price partnered with Toys "R" Us to create a special FDNY Rescue Hero figure to be sold exclusively through the store with a portion of the profits being donated to the FDNY's Fire Safety Education Fund. After the September 11th tragedy, Fisher-Price and Toys "R" Us quickly made the decision to donate all the proceeds to the fund and significantly increase the production quantity. Together, Fisher-Price, Toys "R" Us and consumers helped raise over 1 million dollars. Soon thereafter, a special Rescue Heroes Fire Safety Activity Kit was created for school children.

"We are very excited to continue to have Fisher-Price's Rescue Heroes be spokespeople for fire safety," said New York City New York City: see New York, city.

"While I talk about and teach fire safety everywhere I go, Rescue Heroes allow children to bring those messages home and personalize them on an everyday basis. Preventing fires and knowing what to do in case of a fire saves lives and Rescue Heroes help to establish that knowledge."

After the event, children also had the opportunity to meet and receive autographs from New York Yankees pitcher, Mariano Rivera, who assisted Kevin Hannafin with his fire safety lesson. "As a father, I take the job of protecting my family from fire very seriously," said Rivera. "I want my children to know about basic fire prevention and safety rules, like `never hide, go outside'. With the Rescue Heroes toys teaming up with the FDNY and the New York Yankees these important messages are going to be heard and well received by children and their parents."
