FDA passes final bar coding rule.

) rule. The FDA issued the final rule, effective April 26, requiring bar codes on drug labels and blood products. Introduced last spring, the measure is part of a sweeping government-based effort to improve patient safety. FDA officials hope the regulation will help eliminate a half million medication errors medication error Malpractice An error in the type of medication administered or dosage. Hospitals that employ bar-coded medication administration programs significantly reduce medication errors and their associated complications. In a recent study at a Veteran's Affairs Medical Center, clinicians administered 5.7 million doses to patients with no medication errors.
