FDA commissioner resigns.


David Kessler David Kessler may refer to:

, the 45-year-old pediatrician and lawyer who headed the Food and Drug Administration since 1990, resigned last November. We were sorry to hear the news.

Among Kessler's key achievements: The FDA regulated cigarettes as a nicotine-delivery system, giving the agency power to limit cigarette advertising to children. It also ensured that the "Nutrition Facts" labels on foods are clear and informative.

"Let's hope the next commissioner has Dr. Kessler's wisdom, energy, and compassion," said Jacobson.

Starbucks Brew-Ha-Ha

How much caffeine is in a cup of Starbucks coffee? Before writing our December 1996 cover story on caffeine, we asked the company for test results.

When we got them, we were floored: "Our average caffeine content for regular coffee is 250.3 mg for 8 oz."

"So our caffeine content will be higher," the company admitted. And it was Starbucks's higher number that we published.

Now the company says that its lab report was not for a typical cup of Starbucks coffee after all, but for "the maximum amount that might be extracted from the amount of beans that we use," according to according to
