FCB TO ACQUIRE BORDERS, PERRIN & NORRANDER IN PORTLAND AND SEATTLE; ALREADY NO. 1 ON THE WEST COAST, FCB ENTERS THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST

CHICAGO, Sept. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Foote, Cone & Belding Communications, Inc. (NYSE: FCB), has signed an agreement to acquire Borders, Perrin & Norrander, Inc. (BP&N), the Pacific Northwest agency well-known for its award-winning creativity.
BP&N operates offices in Portland, Ore., and Seattle. In 1992, the agency had billings of approximately $50 million and a staff of 65.
According to the terms of the agreement:
-- FCB will acquire 100 percent ownership of BP&N's operations in Portland and Seattle and the majority interest in its Sandstrom Design group.
-- BP&N will operate under its current brand name and existing management structure.
-- BP&N principals, Pete Hatt, chairman and chief executive officer, and Bill Borders, president and director of creative services, will continue to lead the agency in their respective roles, reporting to FCB West, headed by Jack Balousek, president of FCB Communications, Inc.
This acquisition extends FCB's unique balance of West Coast strength to the Pacific Northwest. In 1992, FCB ranked as the largest agency in the western United States, with billings in the region approaching $1 billion from major offices in San Francisco, Los Angeles and Orange County, Calif. Part of a regional growth strategy, the purchase of BP&N is not related to FCB's plans for a second network.
Balousek said, "Borders, Perrin & Norrander has a superb creative reputation, long-standing client partnerships and a highly respected management team with deep roots in the marketplace." He concluded, "As the Pacific Northwest grows in economic importance, FCB will have the capabilities in place to capitalize on emerging opportunities."
Since its founding in 1977, Borders, Perrin & Norrander's powerful creative product has been recognized by award competitions and celebrated in the trade press. The agency has won the Silver Lion at Cannes; 3 One Show Pencils; and has been named a finalist in the American Association of Advertising Agencies A-plus Awards for two years running. Last May, BP&N garnered 18 Northwest Addies.
Hatt said: "We are proud to become part of FCB. This partnership will allow us to enhance our service to clients using the resources of an established global network, with a tradition of creativity that meshes with our own vision of advertising."
Foote, Cone & Belding ranks as the seventh largest worldwide advertising company, and the largest agency in the United States. Its network includes 180-offices in 46 countries, with worldwide billings, including Publicis-FCB European operations, totaling more than $6 billion.
