Bank robbery is the crime of robbing a bank.
suspect to die during the Feb. 28, 1997, North Hollywood shootout The North Hollywood shootout was an armed confrontation between two heavily-armed and armored bank robbers, Larry Phillips, Jr. and Emil Matasareanu, and patrol and SWAT officers of the Los Angeles Police Department in North Hollywood, California on February 28, 1997. , an attorney said Thursday.

Attorney Stephen Yagman, who is suing the Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  police on behalf of Emil Matasareanu's family, said he expects the probe to help him in his case.

Officials from the U.S. Attorney's Office said the U.S. Justice Department's civil rights division asked the FBI to open the investigation in June 1997, but declined to provide details about the probe.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael Gennaco said the probe was initiated after allegations surfaced last spring concerning officers' conduct during the frenzy Frenzy

Yagman released a letter to him from Gennaco that said, ``If the results of the investigation indicate a prosecutable pros·e·cute

LAPD Cmdr. David Kalish said he's known about the investigation for months, and called it a bizarre move on the part of federal officials.

``We're confident that any independent review of the North Hollywood shootout will result in the same conclusion that was witnessed on TV - and that was incredible bravery Bravery

on the part of police officers,'' Kalish said.

Yagman's lawsuits, filed on behalf of Matasareanu's two children against paramedics and the LAPD, are set for trial in October.

``(The investigation) demonstrates that the allegations made have both substance and credibility,'' Yagman said. ``If I were the police officers who are defendants in this case, I'd be checking to see if my passports are up-to-date.''

An LAPD board has already determined that 29 police officers acted ``in policy'' during the gunbattle, which sent several officers to the hospital.

Police sources told the Daily News last year that paramedics declared Matasareanu dead 70 to 80 minutes after the bullet-riddled suspect told officers, ``Shoot me in the head.''

LAPD officials have maintained that the area was not secure when Matasareanu was captured and that the scene was too dangerous to provide him immediate medical aid.
