Byline: Jim Skeen Staff Writer

LANCASTER - Two men were killed Monday afternoon when their single-engine plane crashed into a field northeast of Fox Airfield.

The two victims were in a Cirrus SR20 aircraft that crashed at approximately 1:40 p.m. into the desert about 100 yards north of the True Holiness Church of God in Christ The Church of God in Christ, Incorporated is the nation's largest Pentecostal and African-American Christian denomination. The plane went nose down and crashed into the field. Prior to the crash, witnesses saw a parachute parachute, umbrellalike device designed to retard the descent of a falling body by creating drag as it passes through the air. The development of modern aircraft has led to many experiments in the aerodynamic problems of parachute design, with the result that the  being deployed from the plane.

The Cirrus SR20 is equipped with a 55-foot diameter parachute to allow the aircraft to float down for a landing in emergencies. According to the company, in textbook deployments of the parachute system the impact of landing is the equivalent of jumping off a 10-foot ladder.

However, it takes a few seconds for the parachute to deploy. A parachute could be seen adjacent to the plane wreckage wreck·age

The crash was the second within a few days for the airport. On Dec. 27, two pilots on a training flight escaped serious injury when their aircraft crashed landed at the airport.

In that incident, one of the wings came off and the plane skidded across the runway runway: see airport. .
