FASHION TO BE FIT FOR THE STAGE MODELS TO SHOW OFF LATEST WESTERN WEAR.

Byline: Amy Raisin Staff Writer

NEWHALL - Forget the checkered blouses and denim skirts - Old West cowboy fashion has gone couture.

For the first time in the Santa Clarita Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country,  Cowboy Poetry and Music Festival's nine-year history, organizers have rustled up some impressive, hand-crafted duds for the Cowboy Couture fashion show Wednesday night.

``When you compare them to mainstream fashion, you're looking at the Gucci and Chanel of western wear,'' said Thea Marx of Marx Productions in Wyoming, which is producing the fashion show. ``You don't find these in the standard western shops.''

At a fitting Friday for the 40 models - all locals, many of whom work for the city of Santa Clarita - Marx scanned racks of cowgirl outfits designed in the tradition of Old Hollywood's western heyday.

True to the western atmosphere, celebrity models will include Elaine Palance, wife of actor Jack Palance, and Missy Farnsworth, daughter of the late actor Richard Farnsworth Richard W. Farnsworth (September 1, 1920 – October 6, 2000) was an Academy Award-nominated American actor. Biography

At the fitting, many of the women cooed over the rust-color, knee-length suede skirt adorned with leather fringe and copper studs. And for $850, an aspiring cowgirl can purchase a black blouse with rhinestones, rickrack rick·rack

The fashion show, complete with music, choreography and a professional trick roper, will begin at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Canyon Theater Guild in Newhall. The $35-per-person ticket includes wine, hors d'oeuvres and a western-theme gift.

While most of the fashions will be for sale at the poetry festival, those who purchase tickets for Friday night's Western Walk of Stars dinner at Melody Ranch will get a sneak peak of the garments, as well as a chance to purchase the items before the general public.

Model Heidi Syslo, an executive secretary for the city, tried on a few outfits Friday and admitted she's a little nervous about strutting her stuff for an audience.

``I guess it depends on the mood of the clothes, how we'll walk,'' Syslo said. ``But I'm excited. To get to wear some really nice clothes, that's a fun part of it.''

Gail Ortiz, spokeswoman for the city, said the addition of the fashion show only elevates the popularity of the Cowboy poetry festival.

``There will be about 90 outfits on display. This is what you call high- end western fashion,'' Ortiz said. ``There are some hot cow-chick outfits.''

In addition to feminine checkered blouses with an updated twist, the show will feature suede skirt and vest sets in deep green and candy-apple red, as well as funky skirts accented with tulle Tulle (tl, Fr. tül), town (1990 pop. 18,685), capital of Corrèze dept., S central France. There are some men's fashions, too, that will be modeled by four local cowboys.
