FASHION FROM THRIFT SHOP.Byline: BETTIE RENCORET Senior columnist LANCASTER - Chic is not necessarily synonymous with costly, and models don't have to be professionals. This was evident when Georgia Lowder put together a show made entirely of outfits from the new Grace Resource Center Thrift Shop. Titled ``Graceful Beginnings,'' this was meant to be the charity food bank's first annual Mother's Day luncheon and fashion show. It was also a fundraiser to benefit Grace's programs that help the needy
A boutique offered china coffee and tea sets, vanity sets, goblets, vintage hats and beaded evening bags. Women, girls and children promenaded in clothing that ran the gamut from casual to formal: street-length dresses and business suits, two- and three-piece pants suits and ball gowns. ``With talent like this, we can do just about anything,'' said Steve Baker, Grace Resource Center's executive director. ``For the services we provide to people who are down on their luck and need a helping hand, we can use all the volunteer assistance we can get. It's rewarding to know that other people care.'' Among the adult models was Lancaster United Methodist Church United Methodist Church, in the United States, religious body formed by the union in 1968 of the Evangelical United Brethren Church and the Methodist Church (see Methodism). Associate Pastor Kathy Ledgerwood, who modeled a floor-length, long-sleeved, black designer sheath. Other models included Joann Marshall and Barbara Parkhurst, both members of the Boogie Woogie Mamas senior dance troupe. Parkhurst modeled a gown that was once worn by Elizabeth Taylor. It was loaned for the show by Lowder's mother, Alta Crusan, and was not for sale. The guests were predominantly female, including two tables occupied by members of the Red Hatters. This is a just-for-fun organization identifiable by members' uniform: purple clothing and red hats. Lowder gave much credit for the success of the show to the volunteers who assisted in putting it together. ``It has been a wonderful experience for me to work with these people and to assist Grace Resource Center in the wonderful work that they do in our community,'' she said. ``Caring for the needy is a noble and sometimes thankless cause, but Grace rallies to the challenge and gets the job done. I'm proud to be a part of it.'' The thrift shop is at 811 W. Ave. I, Lancaster. Menus for the week at the senior life nutrition sites in Lancaster and Palmdale have been announced.
