FAR EASTERN AIR TRANSPORT CORPORATION OF TAIWAN ORDERS TWO ADDITIONAL MD-82S FROM McDONNELL DOUGLAS

PARIS, June 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Far Eastern Air Transport Corporation of Taiwan has ordered two additional McDonnell Douglas MD-82s. The airline will take delivery of both aircraft this month.
Far Eastern, which currently operates three MD-82s and one MD-83, is the leading domestic carrier in the Republic of China. The airline began operating MD-80s in September 1991 and has achieved a dispatch reliability in excess of 99 percent with the aircraft.
Formed in 1957, Far Eastern has 14 airliners in its fleet, serving the major cities of Taiwan with 90 scheduled flights per day and carrying more than 3 million passengers per year.
McDonnell Douglas MD-80 twin jets are assembled at its Douglas Aircraft division in Long Beach, Calif. McDonnell Douglas has delivered more than 1,050 MD-80s, making it one of the most successful aircraft programs in aviation history.
The quiet, fuel-efficient and pro-environment MD-80 features the overwhelmingly preferred five-across seating in the cabin. MD-80s have flown more than 5.8 billion miles since they entered service in 1980. In the past 13 years, the MD-80 has carried more than 900 million passengers to cities on every continent. More than 60 airlines around the world are operating MD-80 twin jets.
The aircraft is powered by two Pratt & Whitney engines, which provide takeoff thrust from 18,500 lbs. up to 21,000 lbs.
