FAR&WIDE Announces Selection Committee For ``LEADERS OF TOMORROW'' Internship; Application Deadline Date Extended.
MIAMI--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 6, 2002
Top executives in hospitality and travel are joining with FAR&WIDE Travel Corporation to support the development of future industry leaders by serving as the selection committee to elect 2002 participants in FAR&WIDE's new "LEADERS OF TOMORROW" Internship program.
The "LEADERS OF TOMORROW" internship program will annually provide as many as ten college-level students with a full semester, or summer, to participate in a work-study program at one of FAR&WIDE's offices in Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia, Canada or the United States.
This year's candidate selection committee is comprised of the following worldwide leaders in travel and education: Dr. John Bowen, President of Johnson and Wales University's Providence Campus; Lord Colin Marshall, Chairman of British Airways Plc; and Mike Spinelli, past President of the ASTA and founder of Action 6, a consortium of more than 2,400 travel agencies now part of Vacation.com.
"We are proud to join together with our travel partners in selecting the best of the best candidates to nurture and develop into top quality personnel that will assuredly strengthen our industry for years to come. We are working together to nurture our future leaders," said Phil Bakes, Chairman and CEO.
"LEADERS OF TOMMOROW" is open to all college-level sons or daughters of travel agents and to children of New York City Police and Fire Department personnel interested in pursuing a career in travel.
In response to travel agent feedback, FAR&WIDE is extending the application deadline for the new FAR&WIDE program to June 15, 2002. To date, approximately 50 percent of the applications received have come from travel agents family members.
Dr. John Bowen has over 27 years experience in hospitality education. In addition to his post as President of Johnson and Wales University Providence, Dr. Bowen currently serves as president of EUHOFA, an international association of hotel school directors. He is on the board of the Hospitality Industry International and serves as Chairman of the Mayor's Advisory Council on Business, Tourism, and Culture.
Lord Colin Marshall has worked in international travel and transportation for more than five decades. He has led British Airways for the last 19 years, initially as CEO, then as Chairman and CEO and now, since 1996, as non-executive Chairman. After service with the former Orient Line steamship company, Lord Marshall emigrated to the USA in 1958 to begin his business career with the Hertz Corporation. In 1964, he was recruited by Avis Inc and rose to become President and CEO. Following the takeover of Avis in 1976 he was appointed Executive Vice President of Norton Simon Inc and Co-Chairman of Avis. He returned to the United Kingdom in 1981 as Deputy Chief Executive and a Board Member of Sears Holdings PLC, before joining British Airways in 1983. He is currently also Chairman of Invensys plc and a board member of HSBC Holdings PLC. Lord Marshall's public service duties include chairmanship of the Royal Institute of International Affairs and of the Britain in Europe organization. He also serves as President of the Commonwealth Youth Exchange Council and as a member of the British American Business Council's international advisory board. Lord Marshall is a past-President of Confederation of British Industry and a former board member of the New York Stock Exchange. In November, 2000, he became the first non-US based business leader to be elected Chairman of the Conference Board. He was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 1987; and made a Life Peer in the Queen's Birthday Honors of 1998.
With 42 years of experience in retail travel, Mike Spinelli, has served as President of the American Society of Travel Agents and is the ex-Chairman of ACTION 6, a consortium of more than 2,400 travel agencies now part of Vacation.com. In 1998 and 1995 Tour and Travel Magazine chose Spinelli as one of the 25 most influential executives in the travel industry and he was named Travel Agent Magazine's Travel Person of the Year for 1997 and 1996.
