It's not the response one might expect as the Angels, a team in the middle of a pennant race, dropped an 8-4 decision to the last-place Devil Rays.

Instead, this was a forgivable mulligan mul·li·gan

in the American League West The American League West is one of three divisions in Major League Baseball's American League. The division currently has four teams, but it has had as many as seven teams before the 1994 realignment. . Today, after eight consecutive wins sandwiched between single losses, they arrive in Oakland for an important four-game series with a four-game lead in the division race.

The home crowd of 41,733, which capped a franchise season-record total of 3,404,686, could stand and cheer knowing that there is a better-than-average chance the Angels haven't yet played their final game of the season here.

The Angels, on the other hand, were in no mood to celebrate before heading to the Bay Area.

``That (four-game) edge is neither here nor there,'' Angels manager Mike Scioscia

It also dropped the Angels' magic number for clinching the division to four.

Last season, the Angels trailed the A's in the West by three games with 10 games to play. It took an 8-2 finish, including two critical victories in the season-ending series in Oakland, to clinch the division crown. The Angels are well aware that tide could easily turn in this upcoming series.

``We're in a better spot than we were last year, but you can't take anything for granted,'' Angels pitcher Jarrod Washburn said. ``They're very capable of a sweep.''

The Angels could not take the Devil Rays for granted either.

Tampa Bay knocked around Angels ace Bartolo Colon (20-8) for six runs in five innings, punctuated by back-to-back home runs on consecutive third-inning pitches by Jorge Cantu and Aubrey Huff. The homers gave the Devil Rays a 4-1 lead.
