and Jackie Anglin filed expense sheets Friday - among 47 children who visited the Farmers Insurance office for the company's second annual Take Your Child to Work Day.

``I helped my mom sort mail,'' said 9-year-old Jackie, whose mother, Jill Altaffer, is a field performance and education manager. ``I even answered the phones. I say, 'Jill Altaffer's office, how can I help you? But my voice doesn't sound like her's. She's very responsible.''

Nearly 50 of the company's 1,000 employees brought in children who spent the day faxing documents, making photo copies, sorting mail and working on the computer.

is traditionally held in April, but company officials said they decided to hold their own program for daughters and sons during summer so kids don't miss school.

``We want to encourage these kids to think about their futures and to see what skills they might need in their careers,'' said Denise Kaub, a human-resources specialist. ``We want them to get a better understanding of real-life work and to see how what they learn in school is used on the job.''

The children were given a tour of the six-story building, had a lesson in teamwork (product, software, tool) Teamwork - A SASD tool from Sterling Software, formerly CADRE Technologies, which supports the Shlaer/Mellor Object-Oriented method and the Yourdon-DeMarco, Hatley-Pirbhai, Constantine and Buhr notations.  with relay competitions and visited the claims training facility, which includes mangled cars and a partially-burned miniature house to teach adjusters what to look for when filing reports.

Ben shadowed his mother, Toni Doktor, who has been a secretary in the office since 1989. As he helped assemble employee manuals, the 10-year-old contemplated one day being an adjuster - or even a chief executive officer.

``I want him to see what I do on a daily basis and interact with the people I talk about when I get home,'' Doktor said. ``He helped me open the mail and later he'll help pass out the paychecks. I want him to see that you have to work to earn your money. It doesn't come for free.''

Commercial claims specialist Stefanie Carlin said her 11-year-old daughter, Alyssa, was a tremendous help.

``She's helped me type up forms and pull files,'' Carlin said. ``She's done a lot of photocopying photocopying, process whereby written or printed matter is directly copied by photographic techniques. Generally, photocopying is practical when just a few copies of an original are needed. When many copies are required, printing processes are more economical. , helped my supervisor sort paperwork and checks my mailbox A simulated mailbox in the computer that holds e-mail messages. Meanwhile, Alyssa said she never knew how hard her mom worked.

``I lost track at 500 files,'' Alyssa said with mock exhaustion Exhaustion

I like that she helps people.

``Before I can do my mom's job, I'll have to learn how to type on a computer without looking down at the keys and I'll have to work on my math.''
