Hanukkah, meaning ``dedication'' in Hebrew, is usually celebrated in the home. Families gather around a menorah menorah

, ideally at sundown, to repeat blessings and light colorful candles in succession for eight days.

It is customary to eat foods fried in oil, like doughnuts and latkes, or potato pancakes Potato pancakes, also known as kartoffelpuffer or latkes or latkas (Yiddish: לאַטקעס), are shallow-fried cakes of grated potato and egg, often flavoured with grated onion. . Children often play a game called dreidel, spinning a top that has Hebrew letters on four sides that stand for the words, ``A miracle happened there.''

``Hanukkah's message remains the same every year,'' Bryski said. ``Light prevailing over darkness, good over evil in the world. The light of Hanukkah can bring us together.''

The rabbi sees the ``darkness'' this year as being the division at large in the Jewish community over who is considered a Jew. He is hopeful that Sunday's family Hanukkah celebration will help to foster a feeling of oneness and pride in being Jewish.

Chabad, the host of the event, is a worldwide Jewish organization. The word ``chabad'' is an acronym for three Hebrew words that individually translate to wisdom, understanding and knowledge.

Individual Chabads are involved in outreach programs for Jews searching for ways to strengthen their ties to Judaism.

The festival will emphasize both Jewish culture and family fun with holiday craft booths, games, music, elephant and pony rides and circus acts.

At dusk, a giant ``hanukkiah,'' or Hanukkah menorah, will be lit with the sixth candle.

``Hanukkah Wonderland'' will be open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday at Calamigos Ranch, Mulholland Highway This article or section may be confusing or unclear for some readers.
