``I like the fact that the bulbs are popping up that my daughter and I planted,'' he said. ``It's pretty cool. You can't stop life from springing back up.'' David and daughter Heather had planted somewhere between 100 and 200 bulbs months ago, when it made sense to anticipate the blooms. But early Dec. 21, the Via Escovar home caught fire. David, son Michael and father Hugh were critically burned. The house was charred, its contents turned to ash. David Ewart David Ewart was a Canadian architect who served as Chief Dominion Architect from 1896 to 1914. As chief government architect he was responsible for many of the federal buildings constructed in this period. , a violinist who has performed at the Hollywood Bowl The Hollywood Bowl is a modern amphitheatre at 2301 North Highland Avenue in Hollywood, California, USA, that is used primarily for music performances. Neighbor Deborah Mann organized the sale to raise money for the David Ewart Catastrophe Fund. Mann and others collected donations at 14 stops in five local communities Friday, and those items joined clothes, furniture, appliances, toys and bric-a-brac Saturday in the cul-de-sac. ``David is so big in this community as far as giving, the least we can do is help him,'' said neighbor Gail Thompson, a family friend for a decade. ``There's nothing David wouldn't do (to help others), even with his busy schedule. He takes time out to make it work.'' And those who know him and his family wanted to pitch in. Among Rick Thompson's fast-vanishing castoffs from his film industry job were 50-foot-long hoses used to create rainstorms and fake boulders, props from ``Starship Troopers.'' Ten-year-old Austin Bleecker never met the Ewarts, but that did not stop him from hawking doughnuts, cookies, water and coffee at $1 a pop. ``My mom told me what happened about their house and said, 'Do you want to do community service?' and I said yes,'' the fourth-grader said. Anisteo and Christina Cervantes just happened to be driving by, but after examining the wares at the weekend sale, they piled $500 of goods in the bed of their pickup truck. As Cervantes was driving away, he spotted a new arrival and stopped the truck to dart back for one last thing. While many have praised David's generosity, he deflected the credit to his upbringing. ``It's their legacy, serving other people, serving the community,'' he said of his parents. ``Putting others' needs in first position is second nature in my family.
